Both branches of my family are widely scattered - hell, right now my immediate family is spread out over three countries and two continents - so I always thought that it was normal to grow up and move far from home. When I moved to Boston two years ago, I expected that most of the people I’d meet would be transplants. But although I no longer find it remarkable to hear three or four different languages on a daily basis, most of my friends here are living no more than a couple hours’ drive from where they grew up. So how far have you traveled from home base?
I grew up in Milwaukee, WI and, as mentioned, now live in Boston, MA. So I’ve travelled literally halfway across the country.
I grew up on Long Island and moved to Florida as a young adult. Shortly after, my parents retired and moved down. Within two years both my siblings moved down as well. We all now live less than five miles from each other but in a totally different state. So in reference to “home” no but in reference to “family” not scattered at all.
Depends on what you consider grew up. I’m about 5.4 miles from my first home (0-12), and about 35 miles from my second (12 ~22). Unlike many of my contemporaries, I loathe the suburbs and would much rather live in Queens than Long Island or Mew Jersey.
Let’s see. NY State, NJ, DC, Chicago, NYC, Vermont. A circuitous route to end up about four hours from my hometown. I never go back though as my parents moved away.
I grew up down the Jersey Shore, and when I went to college in SoCal, I swore I would never move back. But after 2 subsequent years in North Carolina, I’m back in Jersey City, 54 miles (by car) from my home town.
Nobody in my family has strayed very far. After I was five years old we lived in the same place while growing up, right up until I moved out at age 24. I currently live a half mile away from the house I was raised in, as does my sister (though she’s in the other direction). My other sister is about 12 miles away. My parents moved into another house about a mile away from where the lived for over 30 years.
That is a really hard question for me. I spent four years in India, so some could say that was where I did at least some of my growing up. So 7,000 + miles.
I spent the next 10 years or so outside of Detroit, MI. So that’s like 5-600 miles.
I spent all my teen years closer, though, and when I think of growing up, that’s what I think of - 2 hours south of here, in Poughkeepsie-Wappingers Falls.
2.73 miles, according to Map Quest. I stayed in town for college and moved out on my own alst July. My apartment is closer to school, but clearly not that far from my dad’s.
