We’re everywhere -
One set of my grandparents are from Austria and Germany, the other from Israel and Poland. I have relatives in all those countries, many of which I know and keep in contact with. My dad’s family fled Austria in 1941 and went to England, my mother moved there when she was about 19 for school (she grew up in Israel.) My parents moved to Scotland for a while, as did some of mum’s siblings, who live there now. Some of them then moved to England, and my parents moved to Eastern US in the 70’s when I was pretty young (6, I think.)
My parents divorced, Dad went back to England and had a few more kids, Mum remarried here and had more as well. So now I have:
Siblings - Scotland, England, BC, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia. I’m in Oregon. (yes, there are 11 of us.)
Cousins (I have a hard time remember who is my first and second cousin, so I count them all):
Israel (most are there), England, Scotland, Poland, Austria, Germany, France, US, Canada, and Ireland
Wanderlust runs rampant in our genes.
My dad was born in California, raised in Nevada, and moved back. His half-brother and -sister were born in Nevada, and they moved out East. My uncle now lives in Oklahoma and my aunt in West Virginia. That’s it on my father’s side.
My mother came from Germany, and I’d always been told that somebody was back there (not that we’d recognize them at all). About a year ago, we received a phone call from a man in Germany who ended up being my mom’s 2nd cousin. He came over on a business trip and spent a few hours with us. He’s coming again this summer to bring his daughter to Disneyland. However, he’s not from Germany: after WW2, his father fled to South Africa, where he became a guide for rich tourists (and is still kicking at a healthy 90 years old!).
