How far-flung is your family?

My close family is a little boring; most of them are in NY, NJ, and Florida. But if you do a little genealogy work, it gets more interesting; I’ve got some distant cousins in South Africa, plus various other relatives all over the U.S., plus some unconfirmed distant relatives in Israel, Argentina, Canada, and England. (The “unconfirmed” list are families that share some rather uncommon last names and places of origin with what I know about my family, so chances are good that we’re related, but I just don’t have the documentary confirmation yet.) There may also be some more distant relatives banging around the Baltics, Belarus, Ukraine, and southern Poland, and possibly other parts of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire if the Nazis didn’t get them all. (My grandmother swears her family was from Graz, Austria, but I haven’t been able to confirm it yet; the few records I do have indicate they may have been from a small town in Poland near the Slovak border.)

Someday I’ll sit down and do a serious round of letter-writing to various foreign archives; the Latvian State Historical Archives, in particular, are reputed to be absolute geniuses at unearthing genealogical information. (For more info, check out www.jewishgen.com.)

There seem to be some interesting family histories around here, though. Anyone care to share?

My father’s family come originally from Delhi, but we live in Britain. However, my father’s brother lives in Australia with his family, their eldest sister lives in Indiana, and their other sister lives in the far north of India, a place called Solan.

My mother’s family live in a very remote part of Assam. I’m not sure about more distant relatives, but I should imagine they’re all in India.

My family is incredibly UN-flung. I’ve researched the history of my family (both sides) back to 1720, and they have always lived within 30 miles of where my parents live right now.

Parents are in the SF Bay Area, one brother’s in Austin, Texas; we’re in St. Paul, and another brother is in Rome. I think. We don’t see him too often…

My extended family isn’t very far flung at all, but my immediate family kind of is:

Me: Ireland
Parents: Washington DC
Brother: Florida
Sister & Brother-In-Law: LA
Brother-In-Law’s family (so I’m stretching the definition of “immediate” a bit  ) : India

Bro in San Franciso, Parents in NYC, Me in Michigan… some cousins in LA, some cousins in Florida, more cousins in Hawaii.

That’s pretty flung for the US.

Mostly about 1 mile, but like the British Empire, the sun never sets on us, for 6 months at a time. How, we live in an igloo at the north pole.

My parents were both born in Southern California, and that’s where most of my family lives still. Mom and Dad, however, decided to be wild and exotic, so they moved to the distant land of…Northern California. Woo. One of my aunts married a Mexican, and they live in Mexico City. One of my cousins, who’s a UK citizen, lived in London for a while, which made her the most far-flung family member, but she’s since moved back to LA. I live in Michigan, which makes me the most easterly of the whole family, as far as I know.

My parents: Australia
My sister: London
Me: NYC

We’re so flung, …

Me: Ireland (now, was in France, then before that Japan, before that the Carribean)

Brother: Afghanistan (before that, Maryland, before that Dubai, before that Turkey --both Ankara and Istanbul)

Mom: Maryland

Dad: Illinois

Extended Family (Dad’s and Mom’s bros and sisters):

Iran, Switzerland, LA, Germany, Baku, Turkey, France

Me: Chicago
Dad: Quad Cities
Mom: Oklahoma
Brother #1: Celebration, FL
Brother #2: Minneapolis
Sister #1: NYC, last I knew, but possibly Bangladesh now.
Sister #2: With my mom in OK (she’s 11)

-I was born in Detroit, MI, but have lived in California (LA area and Santa Cruz) since I was four.
-My mom is from Honolulu, Hawaii, her side of the family is Chinese…my great grandparents came to Hawaii from China (no one knows where in China, because they were ‘owned’ brides and servants and their papers/history was burned at the docks.
-My father is from Canada, his fathers side of the family has been in Canada since the pioneer days. His mother fled to Canada from Scotland during WWII. Most of her family still lives in Scotland.

my mother and i live in TN, about three hours apart from each other.

one aunt and two cousins around frankfurt, germany
two uncles, an aunt and two cousins in paris, france
an aunt in tehran, iran
and a grandmother that can’t make up her mind which of her children she wants to live with

of course that’s just where we live. i’m half american, half iranian. i have a cousin that’s half portugese. my uncle just married an algerian woman and another cousin is engaged to a bulgarian woman.

Do uncles count? Yeah, sure they do

Me, Mom and Dad : Isle of Man

Uncle 1 : England
Uncle 2 : Quebec
Uncle 3 : New Zealand
Uncle 4 : California

Most distant is a sister living (well, existing) in West Virginia. The rest live within 100 miles. I’d like to fling them even further. Know where I can get a used Saturn V?

Me: Seattle
My family: Philadelphia and the northern toolies of Maine
My inlaws: Tucson

Oh, I hate to fly, too. :frowning:

At one point, every continent but Australia and Antarctica. My father’s side of the family apparently has the xenophilia gene, as at least half the men moved thousands of miles from their homes and married someone in their new home. My mother’s side has stayed mostly in and around Texas.

My immediate family? Not very.
