But it’s rural all the way, rather peaceful, if a bit of a strain in bad winters.
And it lets me live on the Mercotan family property, 70 acres of fields, woods, streams, paths, and lakefront. 5 generations of my family have roamed on this spot!
And the job is one of the few that pays enough to let me pay the taxes on the family property too!
I choose to pay higher rent to live relatively close to work, which is 5.2 or 6.1 miles away, since I split my time between two work sites. Compared to when I commuted 36 miles each way, I’m probably spending $300/month to buy back about 25 hours that I’d otherwise be spending in traffic. Now my commute is 30 minutes maximum, usually 22 minutes, sometimes as little as 18 minutes.
(Does anyone else do the calculation where you divide your net pay by your net “hours awake and not at work”? I consider it to be the going hourly rate for my leisure time.)
