The ghosts of James Buchanan, Franklin Peirce, Millard Fillmore, and Warren G. Harding today thanked and congratulated Donald J. Trump for lifting all of them from last place in various rankings of the Presidents.
Certainly nobody’s ever lost money betting on Trump’s spiteful and selfish willingness to ignore protocol and decorum, but I’m a bit confused as to what the official rules for displaying the White House flag at half staff actually are. I believe at one point it used to be done only for the death of a current or former President, but it’s also been done for current or former Congresspeople, Supreme Court justices, and other prominent federal officials.
Would it really be according to protocol to lower the WH flag for the death of a Capitol Police officer, however tragic the circumstances of his death in the line of duty? I honestly don’t know the answer to this, seeking qualified ignorance-fighter.
The official White House rule is apparently “whatever Donald Trump wants”, as apparently the “rules” allow for mustering a 250,000 person army on the White House lawn and attacking Congress.
Sorry, nothing personal and I didn’t mean to hijack your GQ type question but this is the pit and the minimization of this event is pushing my buttons.
BTW, you’ve always been one of my favorite posters.
250K? Isn’t there a typo in there somewhere? I was at the Women’s March in Jan '17, which was estimated to have somewhere short of 500K protestors, and you definitely couldn’t have fit half of us onto the White House lawn.
Shhh! thank you, back atcha, but we can’t talk like this in the Pit!
I have a confession. Over the past couple of days I’ve been thinking I could use 3 brains and 3 computers working at the same time, I’m trying to switch back and forth checking news, posting, talking to friends…and stuff slips through the cracks.
I typed in that number as a placeholder, intending to look it up and plug in a real number before I posted then I forgot. …
15 minutes later
I went to look up a crowd size estimate for the Save America rally thinking it would be easy to find. The rally was permitted for 30,000…but in terms of the actual all I could find was an article that said more than 10,000 and if anyone says 100,000 thats too high but it’s really hard to tell without aerial photos. Than I saw an article in the sidebar that looked interesting, then that lead to another …then I remembered I had a half-finished reply to Kimstu still open…
It astonishes me to realize that he’s the fourth worst President I have lived through! Holy geeze! At the time, no one thought he’d ever be outstripped in that category!
