Why is all CAPS so hard to read?
Serious question. My use of a keyboard for the last 20 or so years, and my 7 yr old daughter’s learning to write mean that our penmanship is roughly equivalent. Neither of us can write cursive in a legible fashion, but that really does not count on a keyboard that has the shift and shift-lock functionality.
I realise someone has planted something sharp and probably spiky under Mr. Trump’s ass, but every fucking “truth” is all CAPS.
Does he re-read them? That’s a stupid question, of course not. But do his semi-literate followers manage to read them? I am a guy who has struggled through Umberto Eco’s collection, and that is an author who would never use a simplistic term when a completely unknown noun, adjective or verb could be used instead.
I like to think I am intellectually above Mr. Trump’s audience, but gosh, I struggle to read the “truths”.
Silly question! Truth is TRUTHIER when it’s in all CAPS. Truth manifests its TRUTHINESS when it is screaming in your face. Everybody knows THAT!! And the more exclamation points, the better!!!
Whenever I try to read AAAALLLLLCAAAAAPS!!!, I feel like the writer is not only shouting, but doing so inches from my face. Sometimes I can feel the spittle…
That’s nature’s way of suggesting that you avoid them.
A quick off-topic answer to this question. It is well known in publishing/ typographic/ graphic arts circles that U&lc makes body text much more readable than ALL CAPS. I recall learning, I know not where, that at least part of the reason is that, when reading, we don’t actually look at every letter in a word. We look at the first and last letter and the overall shape to infer the word. (I suspect that if you scanned the Misread Thread Titles threads, most of the misreadings would fit this pattern.)
Obviously, a word set in U&lc is more likely to have a distinctive shape, with ascenders (d, f, h, etc.) and descenders (g, j, p, etc.), than a word in all caps, where every letter is the same height.
You’re fine, just overreading. The supporters only see, ‘FAKE’, ‘SCHOOLYARD NAME INSULT’, ‘GREATEST AMERICA FIRST PRESIDENT’, ‘ME’, ‘GLOBALISTS’, ‘MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN’.
We, normal people, should be thankful PAB is limited in his attention span (other than his admiration for himself in rumpled ill-fitting suits). I used to think that he kept things short for his limited cult members but now I think that’s all he’s capable of.
