It’s well known that one of the methods of money laundering used by criminal enterprises and gangs is to pay outsized sums for AirB+B bookings, or limo rides (and then never show up), or to pay ridiculous sums for a common item on ebay.
This bullshit with countries and others shoveling money to Trump properties is just more of the same. Moneylaundering/buying influence. It’s criminal in nature.
What’s funny is that I’ve used that method in online RPGs that don’t allow trading between characters on an account. If I want to send money between characters, I put a cheap item on the auction house for the amount of money I want to transfer, and then buy it while signed in with my other character.
Most games aren’t that dumb and if they don’t want you to trade between characters on your account they make it so you can’t even see an item posted by another character on your account. But I’ve played a few where that worked.
I never thought about the fact that I was technically money laundering in a virtual world.
