I did know about most of these. I had forgotten some, but there are so many that it’s like trying to count falling leaves on a windy autumn day.

I think comedians should be edgy and can say what they want when they are performing.

I have read that comedian George Lopez spoke somewhere and said Mexicans are thieves.
Is that different because he is Latino?
Was this incredibly vague joke from Lopez said at a rally for a candidate? If not, it’s not the same fucking thing, is it?

Exactly. When you are jokingly racist against your own culture, it’s a bit different to support a real racist with bad jokes.

American comedian and actor George Lopez recently made an appearance at the Harris-Walz campaign on October 27, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona. As he climbed up the stage, he imitated Donald Trump’s dance moves and proceeded to give a speech endorsing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
In his speech, George joked about the time Donald Trump said he’d build a wall in 2015 to stop illegal immigrants from coming into the country. The comedian said:
“Donald Trump said he was going to build a wall and George Lopez said you better build it in one day because if you leave that material out there overnight…”
If Trump said that rich white men are assholes, I would not consider that bigoted. I would consider that he somehow found his inner id.
And often true.
Comedians should be edgy. They should also be….you know……funny.
No one is suggesting that he did anything that was illegal or should be illegal. But when someone gets on a stage and says nasty things about a person or group of people, they run the risk of offending that person or group of people……which is highly likely if they say something offensive that isn’t funny.
For example, if I called myself a comedian and got up on stage and said …….Suntan Lotion is a loser who can’t hold down a job or a man, ha ha ha…….I would expect you and your friends to be offended, because I just said something nasty about you that didn’t come close to being funny. I wouldn’t expect you to suck it up and laugh just because I called myself a comedian and called what I said a joke.
I love edgy comedy, but the trick is that it needs to be funny, which is why it’s a hard thing to pull off.
That is a self depreciating joke.
I could say - If you give your money to a white man, don’t turn your back because “Oh, it’s in the mail” Is the answer.
The main issue is not the comedian being “edgy”.
The main issue is that the Trump team vetted the jokes to the extent they were on a teleprompter. They knew what he would say beforehand and were clearly ok being represented that way.
Did the Harris team vet his jokes beforehand and approve them to go up on a teleprompter for him to read? Also Lopez is himself Mexican-American and was being self-deprecating, rather than some white dude from the MIdwest insulting another group of people.
That he’s even coming up in the discourse is a truly pitiful attempt at a tu quoque.
