100 years ago every new parent knew or was related to someone who had lost an infant to disease, and the fear of infant mortality drove almost everybody to vaccinate their children without hesitation. That fear persisted through a generation or two but now first world parents simply have no experience of widespread infant mortality. Consequently many of them don’t see the value in vaccination.
The US presidency has been relatively un-corrupt (by world standards) for so long that people simply have no memory of what happens to decision-making when the highest level of leadership make their decisions based on bribes. Someone from a country that has suffered the effects of long-term major corruption would jump at the chance for non-corrupt leadership.
[Of course, corruption is so insidious that someone from such a country is unlikely to believe there is such a thing as non-corrupt leadership, and the USA is at or close to that point].
Trump dismisses ‘profiting off presidency’ claims after reports he made over $1bn in crypto
Donald Trump has brushed off concerns he’s “profiting off presidency”.
“ I don’t get involved in my personal finances, we have funds that run my money’, he told journalists on Wednesday (1 July).
His comments come after it was disclosed the president earned more than $1 billion from two cryptocurrency businesses that now outpace what he earns in revenue from his extensive property portfolio.
Trump said he’s “had a great career in business” that has brought in high earnings.
When asked by a reporter if he was “profiting off his presidency”, he brushed it off by saying, “ Well, you know why I’m profiting? 'Cause the stock market’s going up. Everybody’s profiting.”
“Do you have a 401k? How’s your 401k done? It’s about up 85%”, he added before heading off to North Dakota in his brand-new Air Force One for the first time, to Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.
Try to find the reporting on this on Fox News. I cannot locate a peep of this on their website right now. If the “right” never heard about this, why would they say fuck off?
The right lives in a bubble that protects them from Trump’s corrupt dealings, his idiotic war blunders, the pathetic “state fair”, the reflecting pool swamp, and on and on. Also, it is fake news anyway.
If you want to listen to Jeanine Pirro talk about the indictment, there’s a video in this link. At about the 4:50 mark, she describes just EXACTLY what happened that caused the gentleman to be arrested. Then at the 8:50 mark she talks about the damage, which is over $1,000.00, which makes it a felony. A reporter asks her how it’s been proved that it’s over a thousand bucks, to which she replies “with an expert. Come to the trial”.
An immediate problem for the prosecution would appear to be that Hearn was not found to be using any kind of implement. I think it is vanishingly unlikely that a prosecutor - who is clearly playing up the nature of Hearn’s alleged crime as much as possible - would fail to mention that he was found to have been using some kind of implement, if he was. So I think we can take it that he was not.
It is essentially impossible to remove paint with your bare hands. The only way you can do so is if it’s already flaking so badly that it is beyond repair in which case it’s a bit hard to see how you can be “damaging” it
Sure, but the whole point is basically the same principle as SLAPP. It’s the nuisance, time, and expense of having to deal with the legal issues that is the main point. Average people can’t afford any of those to any degree, especially compared against an entire government branch
Not really. A SLAPP is as you say a strategy of silencing a defendant by causing them time and expense. That isn’t the Trump regime’s goal here (though it will unfortunately undoubtedly be the result).
The regime’s goal is to have a scapegoat. They just want to have a fall guy that Fox news can mention, so that the low information MAGAs (is that a tautology?) will hear “person prosecuted for vandalism of Memorial Pool” and can pretend the whole mess wasn’t Trump’s fault.
Problem is the guy is probably technically guilty as charged. The larger farce of the failed paint job is not at issue in his trial.
If this gets to a jury trial I’d expect nullification in the jury room. Unless of course the jury is full of red-hats.
Conversely, a bench trial will leave the judge with few if any options beyond guilty and the minimal sentence permitted under the sentencing “guidelines” that seem to have the force of law themselves.
