How has the Trump administration negatively affected you?

Sorry to be a pain, but I have a few more questions:

Do we get to know what that specific reason is now, or are you going to wait to see whether the poll confirms your unstated theory?

Won’t it be hard to conclude anything from a poll that will only be seen or read by an unknown percentage of SDMB participants?

If you need to know why respondents voted Yes, why are those options not included in the poll?

You’re saying he’s “literally trying to murder” you through environmental policies?

Like a lot of US universities, the one where I work has had serious difficulty with international student recruitment of late. I’ll grant that it’s hard to disentangle how much of this has to do with Trump and how much of it is because of university-specific factors (we instituted a policy around the same time requiring non-local first-year students to live on campus and sign a contract for a full year of housing up front), but it was a pretty dramatic dropoff: we had about 150 students from one particular south Asian country in the fall of 2016 and no new applications from the same country the following year. I miss the international students; they were mostly very smart and conscientious.

Explain your specific reason for running the poll and, if it’s good enough, I’ll explain my specific reason for voting “Yes”.

You bet your buttocks.

Now admittedly, he probably doesn’t realize he’s doing that - he’s bog-stupid, after all. And further admittedly if a person doesn’t believe (or admit) that it’s possible to damage the environment in ways that imperil people then clearly they won’t believe that I’m being materially threatened. However I am of the opinion it’s possible to damage the environment in harmful ways, and I’m of the opinion that I live on this planet, so yes indeedy, every person who deliberately implements policies that are sacrificing the long-term status of the environment for short-term monetary or political gain are choosing to toss lives, including mine, under the bus for their own benefit.

Why I’m running the poll cannot possibly be germane to your answer, but your explanation could be relevant to the conclusions I draw from the poll. It doesn’t seem like a fair trade.

In any case, I don’t want anything (including my motivations) to skew the way people vote so I’ll keep it to myself for now. I’ll leave the poll open for a few more days and then I’ll explain why I ran it. Spoiler alert: you probably won’t find it very interesting.

I’ll keep my reasons to myself for a few more days just to avoid the remote possibility of biasing the way anyone votes. But I’ll tell you after that. I’m basically just trying to test a pet theory which may well only be of interest to me.

Yeah, but you gotta work with what you’ve got.

There are too many possible answers for that to be workable so I thought I’d just keep things simple and stick with yes or no.

Same here.

I won’t watch the TV news anymore because I can’t stand to see his face and those of his lying compatriots on it. Does that count for your purposes?

This article lists a few major companies that raised (or plan to raise) prices in response to the tariffs. This includes several brands I regularly patronize: Coca Cola, Pepsi, Jack Daniels, Kleenex, Campbell Soup, Samuel Adams, Walmart, Costco. That should be enough to justify a “Yes” answer to this poll. Of course there are many more companies that raised prices - I think pretty much every company that uses aluminum or steel.

On top of that, my project at work was severely delayed by the government shutdown, which has impacted my career. Financially, I eventually got back pay, but it look a long time (last adjustment came last week). Which means I lost out on returns on the investment I would have made if I’d received the paychecks on time.

PS - For the record, I can’t stand Trump. However, I’m not American, so I can only vote no.

Why is that? Many people outside the US have been affected by Trump.

The Trump Administration has caused me to have vicious arguments with the few family members I have left. Now I’m more alone than ever.

Specific ways he has negatively affected me:

a. The company I work for has made long term business deals to manufacture auto parts, often in plants in China. The actual profit margin is around 5-20%. The 10% tariff has greatly reduced the profits the company has made this year and thus both reduced my bonus and increased the chances I will be laid off.

b. By lowering the reputation of the United States abroad, as I date Ukrainian women my odds are slightly worse as the USA is now a less good place to aspire to move to.

His fucking megalomaniac government shutdown made it extremely difficult to know what I could plan on for traveling to an overseas conference later that winter, and I had to delay purchasing tickets till they’d become considerably more expensive (not to mention seriously inconveniencing the conference organizers with the delay). Delayed purchases in both air and ground transportation cost me hundreds of dollars.

His stupid visa policies have also cost my institution good student applications from overseas. Mind you, we are talking about people legally coming into the country here, not “illegal immigration”.

His anti-foreigner showboating has made it such a hassle for colleagues from non-white-majority countries to visit the US that I’ve had to alter project collaboration plans.

And, of course, there’s all the crap that he’s perpetrating on the country as a whole and on our future, which is ruled out by the terms of the OP as it’s not immediately impacting me personally.

So my information is potentially valuable to you but you won’t trade because you doubt yours is valuable to me? You should be thanking me for offering that “unfair” trade :stuck_out_tongue:

If I see this thread in a few days, I’ll let ya know.

You honestly think that whatever policies are implemented now are going to personally cause YOU physical harm to the point where you die?

I vote this as the best answer.

Am I the only one in this thread that took a hit on my taxes this year? It wasn’t even a small hit…my taxes (Federal) went up substantially.

You’ve asked SDMB. It’s already skewed by the sample.

If I was harmed, it wasn’t by any of your conditions. Being insulted daily by an entire class of megalomaniacs who think they should have more power to choose our leaders than I do would be the cause.

Direct actual monetary harm.

Like SamuelA, I work for a company that deal with components imported from China. The stuff we sell may have as high as a 25% tariff.

  1. Best case scenario, I can pass it on. That’s not happening much.
  2. Some of our customer are taking this as an opportunity to shop around for a different provider. So lost sales, or lost margin to keep the sales.
  3. In some cases, we are absorbing part or all of the tariffs, to keep our customers from looking around for other sources. Lost profit.

Serious question - do you own this company? If not, have you had your salary reduced or bonuses reduced?
