Admins: move this if you like. I don’t know where to post it. But this might invite cursing, and certainly involves bitching, so I’m putting it in the pit.
Tonight, college football begins its season. As a fan, I eagerly await the beginning of the season. BUT, as you all know, the beginning of the season is three or four weeks of the crappiest football you can put together.
I can enjoy football on any level, as long as it is LEVEL, and not lopsided. Instead we are treated to Miami vs. Ohio State. That’s Miami, Ohio, not a replay of the controversial national championship a few years back.
My pathetic Gophers play some team I never heard of and can’t remember for five minutes. (Looks it up). Tulsa. How can we win that game? I mean, we can outscore Tulsa, but how can we WIN? I could really use a distraction, being sick, busy, and upset by the disaster. Instead I get “Big 10” vs. “There’s a college called Tulsa?” It’s like if baseball began with the Yankees playing the AAA Rochester Redwings.
Grumble. How long have they been doing this shit? Why can’t they just play some real football games instead of these several weeks of stupid mismatches?
I know this is the pettiest of complaints, but I hope some other college football fans can sympathize.
cricetus, you really don’t want to see Miami vs. Ohio State the first week. If you’re a big Div I school, you’d much rather see your team gorge on the weak to set up a showdown later in the season. Let’s face it, teams are getting the kinks out and you really aren’t getting a fair measure of what the team can do just yet. That’s why I think the Texas-ou and Bama-Auburn matchups are so great. You get to see the best of what both teams have to offer by the time they meet up.
Look at it this way, though - in two weeks you get to see my beloved Longhorns take the Buckeyes to the woodshed. adam yax, I currently own a pair of Rose colored glasses, and I’m looking to renew my prescription for the next year…
Please. USC owns the Rose Bowl and even though Texas has a shot of making it back they woudn’t beat 'SC. Anyways, before you start thinking BCS you may want to get by OU first, but you can’t. Mack Brown is cursed against Stoops.
OK, for post 1000. I’m sorry you can see Ohio State for free. I’ll pay my $99.00 and have to watch it online with ESPN. Yes, I think OSU will win. Still, mention the Cincinnati game…and watch people pay attention.
So why don’t you watch Miami (not Ohio) at Florida State on Monday night, instead? That’s probably where I’ll be (at the game, that is, not at the TV), since it’s a home game for us (FSU).
That was the opening game for both of those two teams last year too, and it was a close one. Two traditionally Top 10 teams battling it out in week 1. Enjoy.
Well, we do get Miami (the team from Florida) against FSU in the first week. And a few other interesting games, such as Wisconsin/Bowling Green, Georgia/Boise State, and NC State/Virginia Tech. Any college football is good, although I personally will not be able to sit still for the next two weeks, due to the anticipation of watching my Gators dismantle Tennessee on our way to the first SEC title of the Urban Meyer era.
Well, I only say that because the Noles are pre-season ranked at #12 (ESPN/USA Today poll), not far outside the top 10, but we intend to remedy the situation.
Not so fast my friend! Rippin the hapless Vols up ain’t that big a deal, as Auburn has shown three times in the past two years.
But y’all wallow-gaters aint’ gonna’ be up to whippin’ LSU, Georgia, and then Auburn in the SEC championship game. Maybe in ten years or so. Or not.
adam yax… SC had a lot of close scrapes last year. Not invincible (but still very good).
stoops doesn’t own Texas as much as our OC, “G-D” Greg Davis and Mack Brown create unimaginative gameplans. Our superior athletes aren’t “coached up” to beat the battle-ready sooners. But last year’s 12-0 loss was a loss with guts, rather than the woodshedding we’ve had over the past few years. I went to school in the glory days of the SWC, when beating ou was a certainty and we worried more about university of houston and arkansas. Look for a hard fought victory for the Horns vs. the depleted sooners October 10. You’re scared, aren’t you?
PinkMarabou, what was that? Oh, I guess it was The Fight Song of The Ohio State University. I don’t think you’ll be hearing it much next week. You will, however, hear this.
Well the whole trend was started by Oklahoma and Nebraska, playing three weeks of Division III hairdressing academies. Since the poll voters never punished them for it, and the other top teams were at a major disadvantage playing a 10 week schedule vs the 7 week one. So eventually everybody started doing it to be competitive at the end of the season.
