How I Met Your Mother 1-18-10

I did not like this episode. The four friends (leaving aside Barney, who had almost nothing to do) seemed to be kind of mean, even vicious to each other.

Ted was vicious when he told Robin about “but, um”.

Ted and Robin were vicious to Marshall when they called him the “reacher”.

Lily has no idea how to humor an insecure husband’s ego. and was kind of mean about not believing about Jenkins.

There was another occasion that I don’t remember details of, where Robin behaved like a jerk. I think.

Usually, it seems to me, there is lots of give and take, but it’s all generally good-hearted. A lot of this just seemed mean-spirited to me.

These things happen. Ted is often shown to be pretentious. Solid episode but not classic…

Near the end when she turns around the “but-umm” on everybody watching and playing the drinking game, assuming Ted is one of them?

Or at the very end, when she entered Ted’s class the next day with a megaphone to taunt a room full of hung over people?
It was a weak episode.

One man’s “vicious” is another man’s “comfortable enough around close friends to not act politely all the time”. Besides, they can’t all be the 100th episode with a giant sing & dance number.

And every once in a while friends do end up being vicious to each other. I thought Lily was really mean though…

Lily has a lot of traits I don’t like and I find her especially mean or invasive. However what’s great about this show is that nobody is perfect and everyone has their quirks and negatives along with their better traits.

Lily is not a very nice person, but like “Friends” and “Seinfeld,” this is a bunch of not very nice people hanging out together.

And of course, we’re “seeing” these people through the prism of “Old Ted”, so somewhat immature quirks in behavior are likely magnified.
