He’s a useful idiot for Putin and other enemies of the US, but I as well have never bought the idea of him being an actual puppet just because he’s far too unreliable and incoherent to do the job. Also it’s putting far too much of the blame on Putin instead of ourselves.
What he is, is a hand grenade thrown into American society, economy, culture and governance; he’s a bad choice as a tool for accomplishing a precise agenda, but great for doing indiscriminate damage. And he doesn’t need to be controlled by anyone else for that, it’s just him acting like himself. To the extent he was promoted by enemies of the US, they are getting a lot of bang for their buck.
It’s much more simplistic and knee-jerky than that. It’s foreign aid. Aid to other countries.
In the view of that side of American politics, it’s money that should be spent at home, not elsewhere, and it really is as simple as that to them.
I feel like the soft power and intelligence aspects are generally above the heads of the people clamoring for foreign aid to be cut off - they see 72 billion spent on foreigners that could be used to help people here, or just to reduce the budget by that much and get angry.
Sure, and the popularity of cuts to foreign aid will make it hard for the Democrats to argue the facts. The usefulness of the program is reasonably well understood by Rubio. But partisanship trumps common sense, and the reality is America easily loses more than it gains from this weak decision.
To answer to the OP, I can’t see it ending in anything but a revolution if Dems don’t grow a spine and do their utmost to thwart this shitty takeover, and even then it may be too late. Personally, I’d rather be dead than live in the Christo-fascist nightmare that we are well on the way to.
I just realized I didn’t actually answer the OP. So, IMHO: The successful imposition of a “Christo-fascist nightmare”, multiple acts of genocide across the world resulting in the death of billions, and a nuclear Cold War standoff with a China/European alliance. And eventually when the mismanagement inherent to their worldview causes enough damage that it becomes obvious the system will collapse and they’ll lose power, they’ll launch a nuclear attack on every major population center on the planet, because they’d rather burn the world than not control it. Including detonating the nuclear weapons they’ll have long since emplaced in every significant American town and city as a precaution against rebellion, their own “Samson Option”.

I’m not sure anyone know to any certainty, not even anyone in this thread. I can almost guarantee that almost nobody on the internet is actually making major life decisions as if they truly believe that the worst is guaranteed to happen. And that’s not only okay, that’s the way it should be; otherwise, we’d have mass murder-suicides by now. Hell, a big reason why everyone is so tense IS the uncertainty.
How is this going to end? Nobody will be in the position to predict the evolution of this nightmare in store for everybody not only for the US.
But you could get a glance into the likely abysmal political development by taking a close look to Russia.
From democracy to directed democracy slipping right into first masked and then full-blown fascism. The world will be shaped by the interests of oligarchs that is very little or no environmental concerns, very little concern for the global south, no relief for the poor in all societies.
Could there be a revolution? Mankind would start all over again from a century ago. But this time with the enormous power of social media in the hands of those who would like to preserve their new order. Life could be great if you were at least reasonably rich otherwise just try to get along in your misery. Minority, diversity? No way, illegal to the core. A caste system might as well be possible.
A dystopic view? Maybe. Not unlikely though. And those who started the new order have been elected by the people as they were in Russia. Democratic elections are fading out since they are not needed any more. Those in power and their clan stay put.
