Except he’s done that. He insulted John McCain because he was shot down by the enemy and captured. He insulted a veteran because he was a POW and the MAGAts ate it up.
An interesting draft of who Trump might pick as VP. Most of the suggestions are women, with the sole exception being “Not Now” Tim Scott. I hadn’t considered Sarah Huckabee-Sanders, but it seems plausible.
Yes, trump has insulted military members or the military as an institution many, many times. This coupled with the fact that there’s clear evidence that donny bonespurs is a draft dodger I woulda thunk should have blown up in his face by now, but no.

Here’s an article that focuses on his personal attacks of current and former members of the military, though I think it actually goes a little too far; it includes a couple examples of him insulting politicians who had served in the military, but not about their military service or expertise. Still it does a good job of covering the direct insults he made to members and veterans about their military service.
Assuming trump could deign to choose a woman for VP, Nikki Haley would be a good choice for him. She’s seen as ‘the grownup in the room’ so she would appeal to Repubs and moderates who are leery of trump & his circle’s more loony aspects, yet she’s clearly shown she can toady up to trump with the best (meaning worst) of 'em. I’ve heard it said that her Presidential campaign, with her toothlessly mild criticisms of trump, is really a campaign for VP.
She for sure has the same corrupt mind set as Trump. However, I don’t think Trump considers her attractive enough.
That, and too high-profile, too opinionated, and likely too smart. As someone around here pointed out, he will be looking for another dumb, quiet, and milquetoast moron, but one that will be more, shall we say, compliant.

She has served as governor so she has some right wing political leadership cred to help attract the more traditional Republicans, much as Pence did.
And best of all, she was his press secretary for a time while he was POTUS. Her job was literally to talk him up and fight with the press on his behalf.
I can’t imagine anyone more qualified. Also, she’s extremely loathsome, so I bet she’d be up for it and quite palatable to his MAGA base.
