Does the Minute Waltz, when played properly, really completed in a minute?
The Waltz In D Flat Major, Op. 64 No. 1 by Chopin (also known as the Minute Waltz) typically is completed anywhere from 1:40 to 1:50. Depending on the artist.
As long as you like kid (depending on how fast you play it
) Haha I kill me…
Here they say 3 minutes.
This place puts it at 2:01 mins
Here they also say around 2 minutes.
This link which seems to lead to programme notes from a performance by Alfred Brendel (a pretty reliable interpreter and damn good pianist) plays it in 1:51 and says ‘minute’ refers more to it’s small scale rather than exact duration.
Well there you go - all found on Google and I’m tired of following these links now.
Conclusion seems to be that most people play it in around 2 minutes or a slightly under.
When I was younger, I saw a pianist (in a tongue-in-cheek performance) play the Minute Waltz in a minute, with a large clock ticking away onstage. I seem to recall that (a) he played the thing at a terrific clip, and (b) he left out at least one section of the piece completely.
Could the title refer to /my-nute/ meaning small? …As opposed to /minit/, like 60 seconds? - Jinx
MikeS,
Do you by any chance recall if that performer was Victor Borge? It sounds like something he would do. I don’t know if he ever actually did perform it in one minute but he claimed (tounge in cheek) to time eggs by playing the Minute Waltz 3 times.
I’ve got a 42 second version on a CD, it does kinda’ trail off into oblivion though. Beat that, baby!
