How mad are the cows near you? (Milk prices)

It’s the stupidest thing, but I’m so glad to see this thread! I thought it was just me freaking out about the price of milk nowadays.

I went grocery shopping after work today: I live in northern VA, and 1/2 gallon of supermarket-brand 1% cost $2.13.

It’s only sold by the liter here, but extrapolating out it costs about US$7-8 per gallon.

It’s between $3.69 and $3.79 a gallon, depending on which store you’re in where I live. It was cheaper at the Royal Farm Store (convenience store), but they’re the same as the grocery store now.

We’re big milk-drinkers in my house, and I buy it two or three gallons at a time. I keep threatening to get a cow and keep her in the backyard. I figure we could make back the cost of the cow in a couple of weeks.

Hmmm. For once my city is NOT the most expensive in the country–about $2.39 half-gallon, $4.59 for a gallon–all types, except fancy-schmancy organic which is usually that price anyway.

These are in grocery stores, btw, in the Bronx and Manhattan. I know nothing of these “Wal-marts” and “Costcos” of which you exotics speak

My milk’s been the same price for a year and a half: half gallon of organic nonfat milk is $2.49 at the King Soopers. Organic milk tastes so much better to me that I don’t bother buying regular milk unless it’s the only kind available.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed milk was getting really expensive!

At the Winn-Dixie across the street, a gallon of 2% milk jumped to $2.99 in less than a week. That’s for store-brand, too. Dean’s was $3…49 for a gallon.

At Meijer yesterday, a gallon of store brand 2% was $2.49.

So I went to Whole Foods yesterday to pick up some okay for kids but not bugs bug spray (Orange Guard) and checked milk prices while I was there. $3.99 a gallon for Organic milk.

As that is what I want to serve the kid anyway, I’m very happy.

But it’s a pain in the ass to get to that store (it’s on the way home, but stopping there would make me very late at $1 a minute for daycare overage charge) so I’ll probably still buy it at the ‘regular’ grocery store.
