The worst car thread got me thinking. I don’t really have a worst car 'cause, at 39, I’ve only ever owned two cars: a '67 Mustang from 1983 to 1991 and my "new car ", a 1988 Jeep Cherokee I’ve had from 1991 to present. So I thought it’d be interesting to see how far off the norm I am.
So Dopers, how many cars have you owned (if you want to list 'em, that’s totally cool) and what’s your age?
1976 VW Rabbit (Hubby owned it when we got married. I didn’t have a car.)
1983 Nissan Sentra wagon.
1989 VW Golf hatchback (which we traded in 10 years later with 186K miles and the original clutch!)
1990 Audi 80 (It had 164K on it when I had to get rid of it because I couldn’t afford the upkeep. I LOVED my Audi! Definitely my favorite car.)
and our two current vehicles, a 2001 Saturn SL2 and a 2000 Subaru Legacy wagon.
I thoroughly expect to be giving my now-11-year-old son driving lessons in the Saturn in five years.
I’m a “drive 'em till the wheels fall off” car owner. And I’m 48.
I’m 38 and I’m on my 4th vehicle. I’m planning on keeping this one 5 years, then I’ll go full out mid life crisis mobile. I only took half a step this time.
I have owned 3 cars solo – a '57 Chevy BelAir that didn’t actually run (my dad and I planned to restore it for me, but we never got around to it, unfortunately), a 1974 Datsun B210, and a 1972 Lancia Fulvia. I have also owned, together with my husband, 2 Fords (an F150 and a Windstar), 2 VWs (a Jetta and a Passat), a Plymouth Horizon and a PT Cruiser. So that’s what? Nine of 'em.
Before we met, he had owned 6 cars, so he has owned 12 cars total. He’s also owned 6 motorcycles. Kevin is 47, BTW, and I am 45.
We just sat down with my dad a few weeks ago and went over all the cars he’s owned. He is 70 years old and has owned 49 cars.
1972 Pinto. We called it the Gerbil because it didn’t have an engine, just a gerbil on a treadmill. When you pressed the accelerator it poked him in the butt.
1975 Fiat Station Wagon. I loved that car - no one ever told her she didn’t have 4 wheel drive and she would go anywhere you asked her to go. The passenger seat didn’t have a catch and would slide back and forth on the rails, providing a roller coaster experience for the lucky passenger.
1980 Camero. No personality at all, but pretty.
1988 Grand Prix. Junker bought just to get around in Hawaii - that state is hard on cars. Everything rusts. My “stainless steel” flatware rusted.
1990 Jeep Wrangler. My first experience with a 5-speed. Addictive
2002 Jeep Wrangler. She’s a good girl and I plan to keep her. She was my first brand new car.
Mustang
Ford Fairlane
Pinto
Pinto
Chevy PU
Dodge
Dodge
Dakota
Stratus
Ford Windstar
Sportster (Okay, not a car, but close enough for me.)
Softail (See above.)
Dodge 2500
We still have the Stratus, Windstar, PU, and Softail. All the others we drove to death. The Stratus has about 120k on it and Ms Hook uses it for for work and trips around town.
1974 Chevrolet Monte Carlo - inherited, my favorite car ever
1996 Suzuki X-90 - piece of crap
1998 Mercury Tracer - current and paid for, I plan to drive it until it’s dead
I plan to get another '74 Monte one of these days when I have some extra cash to fix it up right (and pay for gas!).
1967 Dodge Cornet
1969 Chevy Malibu
1971 Chevy Vega (lemon yellow for a reason)
1972 (or so) Buick something or other
1973 VW square back
1969 Dodge Charger
1961 Corvair GreenBriaer Van
1975ish american POS I forget what it was…
1976 Chevy Monte Carlo
1986 Subaru GLX 4x4 (only brand new car ever)
1971 VW Camper Van
1978 VW Bus
1963 Chevy BelAir
1963 VW Bus still own part of :dubious:
1978 Chevy Caprice Estate wagon (my Griswold Mobile)
1991 VW Passat Wagon
1985 VW Golf (went OVER 400K when i sold it to HS kid)
1985 Chevy Nova (toyota corolla for real)
1995 Dodge Grand Caravan
1999 VW Passat GLX
2005 Hyundi Elantra…current ride
1957 Chevy Belair (preowned by a little old lady, namely my mother)
1960 Corvair (not preowned, but purchased for me by my mother, who obviously wanted me to die) (Note: WORST CAR!!!)
1962 Chevy II (purchased by me)
1960 Triumph Spitfire
1973 Chevy Vega (purchased by me) (Note: Newest car, the others were all at least 10 years old when I got them)
1978 Plymouth Horizon (purchased BRAND NEW) (Note: Second worst car)
1979 Pontiac Grand something (preowned by a little old lady. Yep, my mom again. She tried to give me this car for 10 years and finally succeeded)
1980-something Ford Escort (brown)
1980-something ford Escort (blue)
1983 Toyota Tercel wagon
1993 Infiniti J30
1998 Saturn
2002 Kia Sportage
Note that in my life I have owned only one car that had that new-car smell. It was not worth it.
I feel like I’m missing some cars here. I know I borrowed a Ford Maverick from a friend one winter and drove it more than I ever drove either the Spitfire or the Corvair. But I’m not counting it because it was borrowed. (Actually I borrowed it because I owned the Spitfire and I had a job where I needed something more reliable.Which it was, but not by much.)
Meant to note that the Spitfire was in trade for the Corvair, by an idiot who wanted the nonfunctional Corvair to turn into a dune buggy. Actually I don’t know who was the biggest idiot in that trade, although at the time I thought it was him.
I almost think both those cars should only count 1/2 apiece.
1978 VW Rabbit
1984 (I think) Mercury Topaz
1988 Pontiac Grand Prix
1995 Saturn SL1
1992 Honda Civic del Sol
2002 VW Jetta (totalled a month after I bought it)
2002 VW Passat
I’m only 25 and have had nine, if you count the one my husband had when we got married. Kind of crazy. Only had a wreck in one, and that wasn’t totaled, so I’m not a bad driver.
Age 48. I’m on my 5th car I bought myself. I also “inherited” two of my parents’ cast-offs during my college years, one of which I gave back & one of which I bought for a nominal sum when I graduated.
I also had two steet motorcycles over the years, none now, none likely for the future.
Wife’s 50, on her 3rd self-bought car since the parental castoff she bought out of college.
The car companies would all go out of business if all American bought cars like we do.
I’m 45. Let’s see. . . I’m on my twelfth vehicle. I’ve had the Ford Ranger for seven years; longer than any other car I’ve owned. Really good truck, although I hope to trade it in next year for something more fuel-efficient and better at cornering.
