How many cars have you owned?

If my memory serves, it is seven. I am 45.

I am 38 and have owned two cars.

a) 1972 Ford Thunderbird, which I had from '86 - '88

b) 1995 Volkswagen Golf, which I purchased new and still have.

I also owned c) 1985 Honda Elite 80 scooter, which I purchased new and sold in 1988.

Ford Escort
Riley Elf
Triumph Spitfire
Ford Corsair
Ford Corsair 2000E
Mini
Alfa Romeo 2000GTV - Fed up of owning old bangers
Ford Sierra - Couldn’t afford the Alfa any more. Bought a house instead
Audi 80 Sport
Vauxhall Astra
Vauxhall Cavalier
VW Polo
VW Polo
Toyota Yaris

Another 7 cars and I’ll be up there with TSFR.

I’m 25. I’ve owned one car - a 1996 Toyota Tercel that my father bought “for the kids” in 1998, and I promptly commandeered as my own. It has since been fully transfered to me. It is approaching 265 000 km, but runs great and I expect to keep it for a couple more years (I sometimes think I want to buy a new car, but then again, I want to be there when this once dies… it’s just so hard to kill a Toyota!)

In the next week or two, hubby and I will become the proud owners of a 2001 VW Beetle, handed over from his father. We need a second car because the transit commutes are too crazy for us, and his dad has been trying to justify getting a new car for years, but he can’t seem to kill that diesel Beetle either!

I’ve owned six, and I’m forty.

I was doing great, but in the last few years I had a couple of bad cars in a row.

My first car I was 18. It was as old as I was.
2nd car I inherited when I was in my early 20s. Bottom of the line import with no extras.
3rd car late twenties. Piece of crap econobox, used.
4th car about a year and half later. Kept that one for pretty long. First new car I ever bought.
5th car late thirties. Used and not great. Didn’t last long.
6th car about a year ago. Second new car I ever bought. Hope it lasts.

My first two cars were gifts from my first husband. The first was in 1970, a 1964 Thunderbird. (the picture could actually BE that car, it was sold in Kansas :slight_smile: ) The only problem was, I didn’t have a driver’s licence. The car was unpredictable. The power steering only worked when it felt like it.
The second gift car was a 1972 yellow Chevy Nova in 1972. I actually got a licence in that one.
Five years later, I got a 1976 Datsun F10
Six months later I got a new 1977 Datsun 280Z, and never looked back.
Eight years later, my dear Z had cancer. I was talked into the Devil Car (AKA 1984 Camaro, mentioned in the “worst car” thread)
That was traded for a 1986 Starion. Wrecked it.
Then, a 1992 Toyota MR2.
It wasn’t practical for a travel nurse, so I bought June Clever’s car. It tried to kill me by rolling over.
Then I got a 1992 Toyota 4Runner. Hated it.
Then a 1992 Toyota Celica convertible. Mine was black.
Three of the '92s were new, the Celica was two years old. I kept it for 10 years.
Then my current husband bought my present 2000 Corvette convertible.
I’m 60, but I didn’t learn to drive until I was 27, so that’s 11 cars in 33 years.

1972 Chevy Nova 6 cyl
1972 Chevy Nova V8
1971 GTO
1980 Chevette
A couple random motorcycles I don’t remember exactly because I was drinking at the time… Honda 250 and a Yamaha 1000 cc, I think.
1971 Ford F100
1984 Pontiac Bonneville
1992 Toyota Paseo
1994 Ford Tempo
1971 F100
1998 Toyota Corolla (first new car, still driving this one)
1972 F150
1979 BMW R100RT

Not counting cars primarily for SWMBO. I usually have 2 vehicles at a time, plus hers.

Oh, I’m (counts on fingers)… apparently I’m 38. :confused: When the heck did that happen?

  1. Chevy/Belair - grandfathers car he had forever and given to me when he died
  2. MGB
  3. Olds/Cutlass
    *little beat up station wagon, forget the make
  4. Firebird
  5. Saturn - or two
  6. Volvo
  7. Cadillac CTS

Wow, a trip down Memory Lane I can actually take :slight_smile:

I’m 53 –

1966 Ford Galaxie 500 in 1970 – bought by my parents so I could help out with things at home – my Mom didn’t drive.

1974 Ford Gran Torino – the Starsky & Hutchmobile, though I wasn’t anywhere near as cool as they were. Sold it to my friend’s brother who took 6 months to drive it into a tree. His mother thanked me for selling it to him because the “tank” probably saved his life.

1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass – this was the devil’s car. Most of its mileage was on back of a tow truck :mad:

1983 Honda Accord – loved that car – sold it to a friend after 3.5 years and about 115,000 miles – her daughter used it for 4 years of college before it finally died a peaceful death.

1987 Accord – this car was awesome. Finally sold it for “parts” after almost 10 years, 221,000 miles, AND the original clutch :slight_smile:

1986 Mitsubishi Galant – it was a gift, it served it’s purpose.

1999 Nissan Altima – still going strong, and I expect it will be for many years to come. This 53 year old guy has become a (not al all) little old lady who now puts on maybe 500 miles a month on it.

If you’re still reading…

WAKE UP! :slight_smile:

I’m similar to the OP: I’m 38 and on my second car.

My first was a 1987 Plymouth Horizon that I drove until it was totaled in an accident. At the time I had been thinking it was about time to start looking around for a replacement, but I was in no particular hurry since it seemed to be running fine at the time.

My current car is a 1998 Mercury Sable, which I’m in no hurry to replace.

Yeah, I’m a pretty inertial kind of guy. If I ever get married, I won’t be in a hurry to trade her in either.

I’m 44 and I bought my first car when I was 20. I’ve owned eight cars:
a Nova, which was pretty much a junker but all I could afford;
a Chevette, which I ran into the ground and traded in on;
an Escort, which I had on a three year lease;
a Jeep, which turned out to be continous problems, so I traded it in on;
a Rodeo, which I wrecked;
a Camry, which I liked and pretty much drove into the ground;
a Ranger, which I owned for a couple of years at the same time I had the Camry because I wanted to have a second car but which I eventually sold because I wasn’t using it;
another Camry, because I liked my first Camry and which I have now.

I’m 48 and I’ve had 3 vehicles

'73 Plymouth Satellite from 1976-80
'87 Chevy Nova from 1997-2002.
'02 Mazda Protege 5 from then to now.

Didn’t think about it until now but I went 17 years in there without a vehicle. Most of that time I lived in Washington, DC where a vehicle was more hassle than convenience.

I’m 29, and I’m on car #2. I’ll probably be on #3 by my birthday since the current car has transmision problems that’d probably cost more to fix than I paid for it. I’m not sure if I’ll be ready to buy a new car, or get another used one.

1987 Chevy Celebrity - had it from 1995 to 2003
1994 Dodge Shadow - from 2003 to now

1973 Ford Mustang
1984 Chrysler Laser
199X Chevy Beretta (only owned it for six months)
1995 Miata (still own)
2000 Ford Explorer (Superwife drives this one)
1999 Jeep Wrangler (still own)

14 I think. Still own 10 of them. 15 or so bikes, 8 of which I still have. Well, 10 actually, but 2 are just parts.

One to drive, one in the shop.

In my case
1961 Chevy 1/2 T PU
1961 Simca
1963 Chrysler Newport
1968 Plymouth Fury (Ex cop car)
1967 Trimuph Spitfire
1967 MGB roadster (still own)
1976 Mercury Capri
1974 Volvo 142GL
1979 Volvo 242DL
1989 Volvo 244DL
Since 1992 I have had a car supplied as part of my job. I have had at least one of every model car Volvo has brought into the UA since then. Typically I get two new cars a year.
Age 54

I’m 45, and I’ve had 9 vehicles, including those that are jointly owned:

59 Plymouth Fury (I bought it in 79, and it would take the honors as “worst”, although it was cool in its own decrepit way)
72 Toyota Corolla (hand-me-down from my brother, who got it used)
82 Mitsubishi Colt (bought new)
83 Mitsubishi Colt (bought used as a replacement after the first one was wrecked)
86 Jeep Cherokee (new)
85 Toyota Corolla hatchback (bought used)
84 Toyota Celica (bought used)
02 Nissan Sentra (new)
06 Ford Escape hybrid (new)

I also married into a 76 Dodge Colt, which Mr. Legend had bought new (his first new car).

[ul]
[li]1994 Toyota Celica - me and my sister shared it. I was 14 but we lived in a small town, no one noticed - it got totalled (Brendon+car+tree=bad)[/li][li]1995 Suzuki Sidekick - got it at 16. Traded it in later for a better vehicle.[/li][li]2001 Hyundai Accent - Still have it. Horrible looking but wonderful on gas.[/li][li]1975 MG-B - was my dream car. Dad bought it for us to restore and me to drive…I worked for 5 months, then drove it for maybe 2 months and he decided that I didn’t need it when I was away at college…[/li][/ul]

Also, when I was 17, my bro-in-law bought me a Kawasaki Ninja. It lasted two months, but I couldn’t afford the insurance after that (I have a horrid driving record, including two suspensions by the time I was 18) so it was sold.

I’m currently 20, my usual, day-to-day commute is on a Schwinn. I’m saving up for a 70’s Vespa…

Brendon

Oh, I forgot, all of them bought used. I don’t ever plan on owning a new vehicle. My sisters and parents all buy new (or newer) cars, but they seem to go through them a lot quicker than I do. Plus, I’m cheap…
