I suspect the name used to be more common than it is now, at least in the U.S. What about other countries? Is there any way to estimate the total number of Cecils in the world? (Though in our hearts there can be only one *true *Cecil.)
I cant tell you how many just how often Cecil occurs in the United States and that is .078% of people are named Cecil according to the site below.
If You take .078 and multiply it by the U.S population you would get the approx. # of Cecils in the U.S.
Last I checked it was about 270,000,000 in the US, which would work out to 21,010,000 Cecils in the US.
According to the site below"U.S. Population Clock" the current population is 291,578,275.
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/popclock
That’ll teach me to read everything. You’d multiply by .00078, not .078 if the number is .078%, and the result would be 210,060 Cecils.
22,743,105 Give or take a Cecil
Your right I’m A bone head! 227,431 Give or take a Cecil!!!
Thanks for your help Q.E.D.
Did you remember to divide the total population by half?
No. The statistic quoted was the percentage of the total population named Cecil. Thus, it already includes the distribution of males vs. females.
Of course, dividing by half to take into account the female population might be a bad thing. Perhaps he’s really Cecilia.
[sub]That might take into account his high accuracy rate on answers to questions[/sub].

What implies that Cecil is a male name? In my area there are a few female “Cecils” But then again, in my area, some men are looked upon as women.
Out of interest - how is “Cecil” usually pronounced in the US? Over here in the UK it’s sess-el, sometimes siss-el.
But I think over there it’s see-sil?
Julie
There’s hope. There’s nearly twice as many Cecils as Homers.
Yes, but this implies that for you Homer means fat yellow dude rather than blind poet, so it’s not such a great sign after all. Unless you hate the Iliad, which is of course entirely justified.
It’s Greek to me …
Actually, I was just acknowledging the popular iconography of our times. Besides, nobody can figure out exactly how many of them Greek fellas there was. Homer A, Homer B … or maybe none.
YES, IN AMERICA IT’S SEE-SIL
In the USA it’s See-sill, with the occassional exception of the film director Cecil B DeMille, who I usually hear called Seh-sill.
