How many guru's do you know?

I incorrectly started this in GQ. Sorry about that…anyway…

Hey all,

I was lucky enough to grow up around family friends that at least had a Masters degree while most had PHD's. These people, besides
being really smart, were really helpful in school and such. For example, I took an Astronomy 102 class that was pretty easy untill the
final take home test. The last question on the exam was something like "There is a gobular cluster orbiting the center of our galaxy. It's
mass is X. What is it's distance and orbital period." ( I may have the question wrong) Anyway, I knew that this was not a 102 level
question so I called my Dad. (It was a take home exam). My Dad didn't know the answer but he told me to call Sam the astro guy.(#1.) I
called Sam and within 5 minutes had the right equation. I got the right answer. I was the only one.

The Prof was floored until I explained how I got the answer. It turned out that the Prof was applying to get on Sam's payroll at Sandia
                     Labs.

Anyway, maybe a better way to phrase this is how many "lifelines" do you have?

                     Eric

#1. Sam died from a brain tumor at 49. I miss the guy.

Great topic!

For general life issues and such, my dad probably qualifies. He doesn’t have any degree, but he is very sensible and has excellent common sense. Also, if something mechanical breaks down, I call my dad. He can, at the very least, talk me thru fixing just about anything.

As you probably know from previous posts, I am a magician. In performing and learning this wonderful art, I have to say I have at least 3 “teachers” who’s opinions I value greatly.

My father. He has a memory that I admire and is well read.
He answers any question that I can come up with.
He is so smart that he knows somethings that aren’t even true!

My dad teaches English at a junior college, and an online course. My mom was an art history slide librarian and is currently working on becoming an expert on cairn terriers. One of my brothers owns a catering company and half a dozen restaurants and knows hella lot about cooking. Another brother is a world-renowned expert on ground water resources and was one of the big cheeses on the Aral Sea project, which is trying to reclaim about a jillion acres of once-arable land that the Russians messed up by trying to irrigate it.

Family reunions are a little intimidating. I tend to read a lot.

Google has helped me more than anyone.

go sergei and larry!

My boyfriend’s dad is a mechanical marvel! Anything from engine trouble to plumbing problems is within his sphere of reference. He once took a boat apart, fixed it, and put it back together without so much as a manual and no prior experience with boats! The man makes MacGuyver look like a chimpanzee.
