I’ve sent out a few resumes to various places and was told by several people to keep sending it in, even at the pace of once a week til I hear back from each place. Is that standard? I was quite shocked to hear that and assume it would be annoying as hell and maybe even deter them from hiring you.
That is certainly not standard. Most big companies tell you to send a resume in, at most, once a year because they "keep it on file for further consideration (in reality, I think they just resell it as bird cage lining). Furthermore, it is increasingly rare to hear back from companies at all unless they are interested in interviewing you. With web and database based submissions becoming standard, the number of resumes that companies receive for each job makes it difficult for them to receive any kind of personalized response. At most, you will probably just get a form letter or a bulk e-mail sent out by an Administrative Assistant.
The technique may have some effectivness in a really lucky, quirky circumstance. You have seen the movies in which a newly minted college graduate sneaks into the CEO’s office and demands an interview and gets it because he is so brazen. This strategy falls into that category.
Thanks very much. I pretty much expected what you confirmed.
