How many time zones are there in the USSR?

Just wondering.

Oooh! Oooh! I know! I know!

Trick question: there IS no USSR!

But, looking at my wall map, there are ten times zones in Russia. But if you want to add in the states of the former Soviet Union, add one more.

From what I’ve been told, in the Soviet days, all plane and train schedules were based on Moscow time. If you were catching a train in BF Siberia the time might say 10:00 am, but that might have actually been 6:00 pm local time.

haha adam - we have trains like that here in britain too .

1,2,3… er

Looking at a map gave me ten as well, but according to this site there seem to be eleven of them.

Eleven.

I learned that listening to Negativland.

Interesting. This site gives a different time for Anadyr, one hour off from the site you found, indicating that there are 10 times zones in Russia.

Conflicting information on the internet… how is this possible?

Cheers guys.

According to Time Ticker there are 11 time zones in Russia from GM +2 to GMT+12 inclusive.

How embarassed am I? Very. :o

I neglected Kaliningrad.

There are 11 time zones in Russia.

Ashamed that I’ve been beaten to this particular punch, I’ll have to make up for it with linkage:

“Do you know how many time zones they have?”
“Uh, yessir. Uh, four … uh, nosir. I never really studied that up.”
“Eleven.”

An interresting thing is that Russian timezones are generally not very linked to solar time. If you look at a map, you will see that they’re almost one hour ‘ahead’ of the sun, which gives them something approaching constant daylight saving time.

This is the main reason why the ‘white nights of St Petersburg’ are so famous. It’s not that much east of Stockholm, but they’re two hours ahead on the clock.
(For some reasons their ‘black mornings’ aren’t as famous…)
