How many years has it been since you've gotten a speeding ticket?

I have never received a ticket for speeding in all 25 years I have been driving.

Last speeding ticket was in 1983 but too many near misses since. The most dramatic:

In 1990 I would drive home from school on an interstate expressway during some very dark evenings. About every other night a late model Firebird Trans Am would pass me at about 100 mph or so. One night I decided to race the guy. I saw his headlights in the rearview mirror gaining on me at a very rapid clip. I down shifted to third gear and redlined it, then up shifted into fourth and redlined it. I did not bother to upshift to fifth because it was geared so tall that top speed (130 mph) was achieved in fourth.

Just as he was maybe a car length behind me and to the left, I saw a very patriotic red, white and blue display of lights in the rearview mirror. It was not the Trans Am after all. It was a County Sherrifs patrol car. I pulled over and was a bit nervous to say the least. In that jurisdiction, any speeding ticket over 100 mph lands you in jail and a suspended drivers licence. Drag racing is considered an even more heinous offense.

The Sherrifs Police Officer walked up to my window and said "You DO have a drivers license, don’t you. I checked my wallet and could not find my drivers license. I responded, “Yes I do have a drivers license, but not anymore, huh?” The officer then told me to slow down, went back to his squad car and took off.

That was pretty lucky. I guess he had somewhere more important to go.

Got a speeding ticket about 10 years ago. I was driving on cruise control, back in the days when Texas had dual speed limits (70 day, 65 night). Even though it wasn’t dark enough to turn on my headlights, it was still after the time (30 minutes before sunset) when the speed shifted. Fortunately, we don’t have that any more.

I burned the ticket off with a defensive driving course.
