How much caffeine is in this coffee??

Hey all,

So here’s the situation. The coffee maker was given away during the last attempt to give up coffee. I decided to go back to it after 3 weeks , seeing as how coffee is CLEARLY the major nutrient required for human life… but only 1/2 cup per day. What I’m doing is taking one level tablespoon of dark roast Starbucks ground coffee (Caffe Verona), putting it in a pan of about 1/3 c cold water, bringing it to a boil, boiling for about 2 minutes, and letting it steep for five minutes before straining and drinking it. Because all I have is a regular strainer (the coffee filters were given away too), it’s more like drinking Turkish coffee with some grounds at the bottom. But it’s not like Greek coffee with all the grounds included, either.

This turns out really well, and it’ll probably end up being the next big Portland coffee fad, but here’s the question… how much caffeine is this? Any guesses?? Rough estimates? Ideas??

ETA after the five minute editing limit: This was regular grind coffee, not Turkish grind, so all of the grounds are NOT included. This may not have been clear.

What does the label say as to the caffeine content of that one scoop of Starbucks?

It’s not that helpful, because I’m not eating a tablespoon of ground coffee. If you actually did do that, most sources seem to agree that it would be about 180-190 mg of caffeine. But the brewed coffee has to be less than that. I was hoping that somebody had information about boiled coffee, what happens if you let the grounds steep in the water for 5 minutes, etc.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there’s anywhere from 95 - 165 mg of caffeine in 8 oz of coffee. Since you’re drinking half a cup, that might only be 47 - 82 mg.

However, Caffeine Informer has a figure for Turkish coffee specifically, and says that it’s 50 mg per 2 oz. If half a cup is 4 oz, then you’re probably consuming 100 mg.

Lastly, you mention this is a Starbucks brand. You can check out the nutritional information for the drinks they serve. I couldn’t find the specific information for the coffee grounds they sell, but it’s a place to start.

Of course, all of this is just approximations. No one can tell you what’s specifically in your cup of joe without testing it. There used to be a product for that, but it was discontinued.

Thanks! My guess is that it has to be around 90 mg-- more than brewed coffee, less than Turkish coffee. The grounds are standard size rather than the very fine grind associated with Turkish coffee, so unless you actually chewed most of them, I don’t think it can be quite as much as that would be. I wish the caffeine test strips were still around… I couldn’t find anything like them online. Maybe people don’t really want to know.
