I drink about 6 big mugs of coffee a day. I wouldn’t have said this was a huge amount, but most of these are instant coffee at work, and I drink them really strong - it might be equivalent to 12 mugs of coffee the way most people have them.
I’m going to cut down to 1 or 2 mugs a day and see if anything changes. If nothing else, it might make me appreciate this supreme beverage a little more.
Zero. Caffeine doesn’t seem to have the same effect on me as it does on other people. I started a thread about it a while ago and some other people reported the same thing. In low doses, it doesn’t do anything. In high doses, it only causes mild hand tremors but no increase in energy or alertness. I honestly wish that drinking coffee could wake me up up all because I need it sometimes but it just doesn’t work.
If I’m lucky, I get one cup before I leave the house, then drink whatever fits in my travel mug on the way to work. If I get a jonesing for coffee after I finish my mug of coffee, I might fill it halfway again with office coffee or get a small coffee from the coffee bar downstairs.
But I try to cut it off by 11 and switch to water for the rest of the day, with maybe a diet Coke thrown in around 3.
I drink one 16 oz. a day during the week, rare occasions two. I think about cutting down every day, and sometimes I actually do it for a while…but those damn gingerbread lattes always entice me back.
I want to cut back solely because of the money. Unfortunately, I’m a Starbucks addict. The caffeine itself doesn’t bother me, and I can go all weekend without caffeine with no ill effects.
What **Shagnasty ** said, pretty much. Caffeine will keep me awake in huge doses (half a gram or more) and curb my appetite some but it has no real effect on me otherwise and though coffee smells great, it doesn’t taste that way without a lot of doctoring.
Coffee doesn’t do much to me either, shagnasty. I drink it at night and it doesn’t have an effect. I am dependant on it to an extent though, I can feel the caffeine craving after a meal.
I have a coffee maker that makes one large travel mug full of coffee at a time. It’s a 14oz mug. I set it up every night, turn it on first thing in the morning, and drink that every single day without fail. Sometimes, around 2PM or so, I’ll make myself a second cup if I’m really having trouble staying awake through the afternoon.
My hubby nags me all the time about my caffeine consumption (Pot, meet kettle; I don’t think he realizes how much caffeine is in his daily half-dozen cans of Diet Pepsi), but I tell him I won’t consider cutting back until and unless someone really proves caffeine is bad for me.
I did, however, cut way back when I was pregnant, because there is (was?) some evidence that excess caffeine consumption was linked to spontaneous miscarriage. It was a small risk, IIRC, but still, a silly risk to take. I didn’t cut back on the amount of coffee I drank during pregnancy, but I weaned myself back so it was 3/4 decaf.
Coffee is mother’s milk. I used to drink it all day long. Unfortunately, in 2006 I began having problems with polyps on my vocal cords. Indigestion from a malfunctioning valve was the culprit; acid indigestion would back up and burn the polyps in. The doctor prescribed a diet change that entailed cutting back on coffee. It worked! I still drink coffee – beer and coffee; if I can’t drink them, then just stick me in the ground – but I limit myself to two or three LARGE cups in the morning.
Pretty much one 16oz travel mug every workday. Sometimes, if someone is doing a Tim’s run, I’ll get a second one (this is rare though).
On the weekends I drink one giant mug (probably about 16oz also) and that’s usually it.
It gives me a bit of a wake-up, just enouh buzz to get going but doesn’t do much otherwise unless I drink 3-4 16oz mugs in a few hours. Then I get really hyper or shaky. A mug at night won’t keep me up, but out of habit I drink tea (either some herbal blends I enjoy or Twinnings Earl Grey) if I want something hot.
Generally about 1 pot a day.
I brew a pot at home before I leave for work, and drink about 2/3-3/4 of that.
Then when I get to work another guy has generally brewed a pot in my office, and the ration is reversed with him usually getting the lion’s share of that.
On occasion, one or the other of us will feel a need to brew another pot in the p.m., but generally I switch to water well before noon.
Lots of folk have suggested that I drink less coffee, but fuck it. I stopped smoking and drinking alcohol. I’d just be too damned perfect if I didn’t retain at least one vice!
Caffeine in general has the effect on me of making me really jittery without making me any more alert. So I’m still falling asleep yet my leg is bouncing like a sewing machine…
