After many decades of slow and painful culinary recovery from eating oatmeal nearly every morning of my childhood, I have begun to have vague yearnings for it again. Cold, rolled oats with sugar and some half and half or cream over them really hits the spot when I am hungry and don’t feel like cooking.
I know that oatmeal is supposed to have cholesterol fighting properties, but eating it with ordinary milk is about as appetizing as having it with just plain water. My butterfat jones just won’t allow such a healthy combination.
So the question remains; How much cream do I have to pour on my cup of uncooked oatmeal in order to completely negate its cholesterol canceling capabilities?
Feel free to add in any other food related health questions to this thread, like; If I drink enough strong coffee, do I really need any fiber in my diet? I happen to agree with George Carlin that if I need fiber, I’ll go eat some wicker furniture, thank-you-very-much.
PS: Does anyone remember or still see H&O rolled oats on the store shelves? I’m pretty sure that Quaker Oats has probably crushed or absorbed them in its acquisitions. Also, does anyone remember when Quaker Oats came in a cylindrical cardboard container with a pull string that tore the paper seal around the top?
I don’t know about the cholesterol, but oatmeal is fine with milk if you put enough brown sugar on it. Of course it does need to be cooked - 2 parts water and one part oats, four minutes in the microwave (stir it in the middle) and make sure to cover it or you’ll be scraping off the splatters for days. You could even throw in some raisins or other dried fruit, or sprinkle with cinnamon, but the brown sugar is a necessity
I usually use Rogers brand nine-grain cereal myself.
You mean they don’t anymore? How are they packaged now? And more importantly, how are modern kids supposed to make Big Bird’s Busy Book homemade drums?
I have used this cancelling theory countless times.
Every time I’m at a breakfast buffet, I gorge on bacon.
Then eat salad with vinegar/no oil to “neutralize it”.
And I’m still kicking long after retirement!
Leave oats to the horses and other domesticated animals that have no other choice but to munch on what is provided.
A decent breakfast consists of bacon, eggs in some form (3 egg ham and cheese omelet is fine), hash brown potatoes, juice, and toast with butter and jelly.
Or, that’s what you’re going to get if I ever fix it for you.
