I’m in Chicago. From what I understand, the best LASEK provider here is Dr. Kraff. His website (and all of the other websites I’ve found), do not specifcally discuss rates. I understand that there is no flat rate and the each patient can have issues that raise or lower the price. However, I would like to give LASIK to my fiance as a wedding present. How much am I going to spend? $1,000? $5,000? More?
Well, I don’t know about the prices in your area, but the leading doctor near me (in Buffalo) charges $850 per eye. That does not include the $150 consulation to determine whether the patient is a good candidate.
Dang, if you’re all willing to come to Hermosillo, it was a (all prices in Pesos!) $500 initial consultation, and then $6000 for both eyes. I’m no longer wearing glasses, and I seem to think I have the same 20/15 I had with glasses. The doctor is US-educated in case that makes a difference to some of you. You can use the extra money for some truly delicious Sonora steaks or tacos, and go to nearby San Carlos resort town. That’s a wedding present everyone can enjoy.
If you’re looking to give LASIK as a present, be sure to have a backup plan in case the recipient has a condition that makes them unsuitable for the procedure. (Dry eyes, thin corneas, etc.)
Why not call this Dr. Kraff and inquire what they charge? They’ll probably have a lower cost for something called PRK, and a higher (probably in the $1000-1500 range) price per eye for LASIK.
My parents both paid around $1500 (both eyes) for theirs. They were running an opening special. I thought it seemed a little shady (it’s not like it’s the opening of a Walmart, this is major surgery!) but they’re both happy with it. This was in West Virginia, by the way.
Called the number on the website and asked for pricing.
It took about two and a half minutes to find out the information including the thirty seconds that I was on hold.
Dr. Kraff charges $2400 - $3200 per eye depending on your condition. They offer 18 month interest free financing. You will get a $400 discount per eye if you mention the web site.
I paid $2500 total. Prices vary widely, but this is not something where you want to shop around for the cheapest place you can find. Go out and find the best doctor using the best technology, then pay whatever they charge, if you’re going to get it done.
As I’ve said before, you don’t want to go to Bob’s Discount Mufflers ‘n’ Laser Surgery.
I don’t know – someplace that steeply discounts because they have five year old technology isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, it was top of the line equipment when it was brand new. People had lots and lots of LASIK done five years ago, too.
LASIK is almost to the point where all you really need is a technician to do the work. Map your eye with this machine. Cut open a flap. Let the computer guide to laser. Fold back the flap. Lather-Rinse-Repeat. The doctor is using very, very little talent in this, barring complications. What you should concentrate on is the talent of the doctor as a doctor – not a technician – in case complications do arise. That’s when you’ll see what your money’s worth. Don’t be hoodwinked into paying more just because his toy is newer than someone else’s.
