How much of an impact could Taylor Swift have on the 2024 election?

Yeah that was mostly my point which I probably stated poorly. She has a lot of fans in all 50 states. I don’t see how her past association with Pennsylvania helps more than in any other state.

It might have been criminally insane for her not to have some professional assistance before issuing a press release that would get this much attention. It’s a bit disingenuous for her to pretend to have composed the announcement only after watching the debate, though, isn’t it? It was obviously written, shown to others, re-written, fact-checked, re-written again, days in advance, and only issued after the debate was a done deed, so why the pretense of composing it only after watching the debate?

Taylor won a nationwide poetry contest when she was nine years old. She doesn’t need other people to speak for her.

This thread is the first I’ve even heard that she was originally from Pennsylvania.

I heard it reported shortly ago on MSNBC that over 300,000 visited vote.org from Swift’s endorsement of Harris. She’s clearly having some impact. And I guess that’s why each candidate wanted to claim her endorsement.

Only one of them actually had it.

According to the Government Services Administration, over 337,000 people used the link in Taylor’s message to visit the US voter registration website. (story on The Hill)

How many registered and how many actually will vote is the question. Still, that’s an awful lot of clicks in less than 24 hours.

For the reasons listed above by the other posters. Many people at her level of accomplishment have staff who package social media and press releases, and this seemed particularly well done. As I posted, I have no problem if she did have a media consultant help the wording and I have no doubt that she personally directed and approved of what was said, I was just curious.

Oh, that’s cool. I thought maybe you had your own.

You clearly are not a Swiftie or live with Swifties.

I won a poetry contest too. But I doubt I’d feel comfortable, at her height in popular culture, writing a post, she had to know would be so scrutinized.

Or does she really have time to sit down, make sure all the ducks are in a row and post on line.
She pays people to do that, I have no doubt.

She’s been writing words for people to scrutinize since she was 15. It’s kinda why she’s a billionaire now.

Guys, writing isnt a solo gig, any more than song writing is. Writing of that type is always done collaboratively.

Say there was a meeting where Swift put down her basic vision, but even that would have had a spit balling element as people floated phrases, raised concerns, etc. But i expect a lot of the phrasing was hera, whether or not she was typing.

Someone (probably not Swift) filled it out into a workable draft.

She reviewed it, gave notes.

Other people, not writers, reviewed it, gave notes.

Second draft integrates her notes, which likely stylistic (specofic words and phrases), not just content.

She reviews and tweaks it, changes a few words, moves a sentence.

Gets reviewed by a new audience, new notes.

Maybe some tweaks.

Did she ‘write’ that? Or was it “written for her”?

And I’m sure that she, like every professional writer in the world, runs her stuff past people (editors, friends, fellow musicians) before exposing it to the world.

Like Trump does with his social media posts :joy:

Even if she largely composed it herself it would have been run by very competent staffers to make sure that there wasn’t anything in there that might be misconstrued as something unintended. That’s simple common sense.

Also she clearly had something ready prior to the debate. Had Harris for some insane reason said something horribly offensive, she could have held it back. It may have been slightly tweaked just after. It was mostly done and ready to go m

She and I were born in the same hospital in West Reading. Based on her birthday, I was busy studying for finals after my first semester in college when she was born, though.

To keep this on topic: I’m 100% convinced (and this isn’t some unique thought) that the way Harris wins is by bringing in people who wouldn’t have otherwise voted, not convincing undecided to vote for her, or even convincing Republicans to change their mind. An endorsement by Swift will hopefully convince lots of people to vote, and also hopefully this isn’t just a one off from Swift, and she will send reminders and such as the election approaches.

It would be as ridiculous as Christmas shopping, hand wrapping, writing personal notes and sending “Swiftmas” gifts to fans. She has people to do that:

It doesn’t even have to be that maby. 5k in Pennsylvania might change the tide of history

Same, but last year in college for me. And she lived right around the corner from my parents. Definitely upper-middle-class-but-not-wealthy-wealthy part of the neighborhood.

JD Vance agrees with you:

JD Vance also either has no self-awareness or is trolling everyone with this response.

Agreed. Identity politics and image is top of mind for most trumpists. Pure tribal thinking, you’re either in or you’re out. And if it even appears that you should belong to a certain tribe, and you don’t act as if you are, they take that as a personal insult. A betrayal. Swift is a insanely successful, mega rich, hugely influential figure in pop culture. She’s also a young, pretty, white woman with ties to country music and Nashville. And I have zero doubts that she probably has a significant MAGA contingent among her fan base. Given the sheer numbers it would be surprising if she doesn’t. Even given knowledge of her endorsement of Biden in 2020, I’m not at all surprised that a significant portion of those fans have speculated, both online and the real world, about Swift’s voting intentions.

It’s one of the reasons I think that Harris’s choice of Walz has turned out to be so brilliant. Walz checks every single box MAGA actually cares about among its supporters. Older, white, man, born and raised in the midwest, very close ties to his local community. Every white boy from Idaho, to Pennsylvania, to Georgia, to Kansas has a father, a grandfather, and uncle, a favorite teacher or coach at school who looks and acts exactly like Tim Walz. My own dearly departed father bears certain similarities, personality wise and physical appearance. But he’s showing them that you can be raised in that environment and still be yourself, and not give in to hateful thinking. At the end of the day, regardless of any differences you have with your neighbors, they are still your neighbors and you help them, you don’t judge them. That’s not how healthy communities are built. It’s the same sort of thing with Swift.

All that said, I have no idea to what extent her endorsement is going to affect the race. I don’t doubt that it will, but I wouldn’t care to speculate with hard numbers. I can’t imagine there would have been any way to measure her effect on actual votes cast in the 2020 election for comparison?
