How much of an impact could Taylor Swift have on the 2024 election?

Sounds like what happened to the Dixie Chicks and why they dropped the Dixie part of their name.

Has Swift gotten together with her staff to plan her next move? And were they pleased with how the message was received?

If both of the Taylor Swift groupies who follow her in every facet of life are registered voters and happen to live in a swing state, this could be really big.

She made another plea to register and vote at the VMAs last night, FWIW. So it wasn’t a one-time thing.

Don’t forget optimizing for SEO!

I think there’s every chance she wrote it herself and ran it by her trusted media advisors for tweaks. All I’ll say is this is my line of work and its not as complex as described above.

??? There’s way more than two of them. I assume this is a typo? There are likely lots of Swifties in swing states, just like in every other state.

I’m amused that some people think you need a whole team to compose four short paragraphs on Instagram. It was a fine endorsement post, but it wasn’t THAT amazing. People aren’t going to be studying it in the history books or anything. Nothing about it suggests that a talented person whose job involves writing/saying things couldn’t come up with that, run it past a couple people for input, make a revision and go. The idea that it needed to be a ten part process of ghost writers is kind of silly.

It’s four paragraphs of 3-4 sentences each. It’s shorter than a middle school in-class writing assignment. I’m pretty sure the 35 year old billionaire lyricist could shoulder most of that herself.

It’s the backing track that’s trickiest. Never enough cowbell.

Seriously. And the absolute confidence some have in how a megastar operates.

For her songs she frequently collaborates, famously with her long time producer and co-writer Jack Antonoff. For this? I could see showing what she came up and running it past a trusted advisor/friend, but thinking this was a workshopped big production of her media team? Sheesh.

Anyway. She apparently has driven up registrations by a significant number among a group likely to make the same conclusion as to who to vote for as she has. I don’t have the cite handy but I recall reading, here I think, that once registered something like 99% follow through and vote. Her fans are of course scattered all over, so who knows how many of these are in the states that matter most, but it ain’t chopped liver.

She’s had the same publicist – for whom Swift is her only client – for a decade now, so good chance that the publicist at least had a look at it.

I meant to type something like 90% not 99%!

Same here. I saw a post on Threads yesterday talking about her choices in her endorsement post, for example the usage of “you” vs “I” especially in the opening paragraph, how she brought up the fake AI posts as a reason she had to do this. Giving total agency to the reader is apparently a very persuasive technique. It was also mentioned that she first fell in love with words before she got into music and would have been an English teacher had she not been a musician. I don’t think she needed help to write that, but running it past her publicist first doesn’t sound unlikely.

JDiVance speaks:

I don’t think most Americans are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and problems of most Americans

Not megastars in general, but there is that whole video where she talks with her publicity staff about why she needs to say something about Trump back in 2020. It sure looks like there are a lot of people involved in her messaging, and that she has to spend time convincing them.

I have no confidence in how many people were involved. But I don’t think assuming there were a decent number of people who signed off on it and maybe provided editing notes is unreasonable.

I think Trump, Vance, and Musk’s response to Swift’s endorsement were mistakes. The best thing would be to ignore it. The worst thing is to try to minimize or insult Swift. Getting the Swifties mad is an error. The more angry they get that Taylor is being dissed, the more likely they are to vote.

So far, so good.

Oh discussion about whether or not to take a public position and maybe even timing? I would be shocked if she did not discuss that with her team. Decisions about whether or not to do more will be discussed also. Agreed that I would not go out of my way to disrespect her if I was them. A concert in PA with deeply discounted admission with proof of voter registration could be arranged you know …

No, a concert the week after Election Day, with a lottery for tickets, and you get a spot in the lottery by submitting proof that you voted.

My understanding is that it’s illegal to offer items of value as inducements to vote or to register to vote in federal elections.

It is. One year I had the idea to spend Election Day at a local business I frequented ( a fitness studio ), and to give a bottle of juice or water to anyone that could show me an “I voted” sticker, but I found out it was illegal.

I wish Taylor would agree to be a guest performer at a rally the weekend before the election. That would be energizing.
