Dolly does have a heart of gold, no doubt.
To the best of my knowledge, Swift hasn’t endorsed a specific candidate or party. I understand why the GOP is concerned given that Swift’s younger fans aren’t likely to vote Republican. But it just makes them look like mustache twirling villains to go after Swift for encouraging people to vote. Aw, who am I kidding? Looking like villains is what made the GOP what it is today.
She endorsed Biden in 2020.
However-
*Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift hasn’t even endorsed President Joe Biden for reelection yet. That hasn’t stopped members of MAGAland’s upper crust from plotting to declare — as one source close to Donald Trump calls it — a “holy war” on the pop megastar, especially if she ends up publicly backing the Democrats in the 2024 election.
…
In an email to Rolling Stone, Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller shrugged off the prospect of a Swift endorsement for Trump’s rival. “Joe Biden might be counting on Taylor Swift to save him, but voters are looking at these sky-high inflation rates and saying, ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,’” Miller wrote.
…
Swift also blasted Trump during the 2020 election, accusing him of trying to “blatantly cheat and put millions of Americans’ lives at risk” following the Trump administration’s efforts to hinder mail-in voting amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, as Trump has been having a popularity contest with Swift in his own head, others close to him — including GOP operatives, some of his 2024 staff, and Trump-y media figures — have been brainstorming different ways to go after Swift. Since late last year, these Trump allies have repeatedly discussed how to turn the culture-warrior dial up to 11 if she re-endorses Biden this year, the sources recount.
Publicly, members of Trump’s inner sanctum and social circle are already signaling Swift’s prominent position atop their enemies list — a situation that has reached fever pitch now that Swift’s boyfriend will once again be playing in the Super Bowl.
*On Monday, Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba shared a post on social media that includes the caption: “Who thinks this country needs a lot more women like Alina Habba, and a lot less like Taylor Swift?” (Habba has represented Trump in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case, where he was ordered to pay $83 million.)
…
MAGA pundits have spent months fuming about Swift and her boyfriend — already a hated figure for his role as a Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine spokesman.
Thanks. I had completely forgotten because I don’t pay attention to Swift. Not because I think I’m too good to enjoy pop music, but because I’m old and not in her target demographic. I did see some pundits on Fox “advising” Swift not to risk alienating her fans by endorsing anyone. It was a hoot.
The first time I saw her live, I wore a Motorhead shirt because I figured I was going to be the only male my age who wasn’t there chaperoning his daughter and I wanted to stand out. I got several high-five from various dads.
The second time I got a copy of a shirt she’d worn at a concert a few weeks earlier, which featured a unicorn with a rainbow thought bubble reading “Haters gonna hate”. I didn’t get any high-fives that time, but another time I wore it to a sandwich shop for lunch and they gave me a free cookie with my sandwich.
Yeah, same here. In fact if it wasnt for the fact that the MAGAs are laying some hate on her about this, I wouldnt have looked it up. Isn’t that the Barbra Streisand effect?
How many of these people will actually vote is questionable but it’s a start.
Whoever originally posted that must have been sarcastic, right?
Certainly egocentric. That’s the kind of poll you hire someone else to post for you so you can reply with mock gratitude. The more effort they put into “fighting” her, the less hopefully they have for other things. I could see some governors trying to block her from playing in their state as a way to curry favor.
How many parking lot lawyers do we need, anyway?
Only if they pave paradise. I’d want a very good lawyer on the other side.
And take the economic hit of losing all the revenue her concert would generate, directly and indirectly? And enrage every Swifty in their state? And look foolish in the process? And that’s assuming they could dig up legal grounds to do it.
These are Republicans. I could see some governors buying tickets to see her show (with taxpayers funds) in order to verify that people are idolizing her inappropriately.
I’m also wondering how long it will take Trump to come up with a foolproof plan to set equally well-loved celebrity and Trump fan Kanye West on Taylor. That should go well. Kim Kardashian probably has video of Taylor in a MAGA hat.
Just for context on the remaining stops of her tour (when it resumes in the US)
10/18 - 10/20 Miami, FL (I would love to see DeSanctimonious try to “fight” her like he did Disney)
10/25 - 10/27 New Orleans, LA
11/01 - 11/03 Indianapolis, IN
From a Wall Street Journal editorial today on the Swift-Kelce Psyop To Re-Elect Biden conspiracy theory:
"This is either lunacy or it’s theater. Our guess is the latter. Many of its purveyors well know they’re putting on an act, but there’s fame and notoriety and money to be had from spinning conspiracy theories, the crazier the better.
Yet the paranoia on the right about a romance between the most popular singer in the world and an NFL player does make Republicans seem, frankly, weird. Americans who want a return to normalcy won’t find it in a movement that demonizes two of America’s healthier entertainments…the CIA isn’t orchestrating it all, and neither are the Illuminati, the Freemasons, Elvis, JFK, Bigfoot, Opus Dei, or alien lizard people living among us."
“A question, though, for the trolls: If they believe defeating Mr. Trump is so easy that Mr. Biden can do it merely by getting an endorsement from a singer who backed him in 2020, doesn’t that suggest the GOP might be making a mistake by nominating such a weak candidate?”
They can just respond by having Ted Nugent and Kid Rock endorse Trump. That’ll show Biden and Swift!
I think the conspiracy theories around Taylor Swift originated with the crew that used to man her yacht- The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
She has proven to be effective in getting young people to register to vote and I expect her to do the same this time around. She may or may not formally endorse Biden but the MAGA fixation on her will I believe backfire.
Tell me you felt even a twinge of remorse for this one.
No, sorry but someone had to say it.
It’s good to reminisce about the distant past when Republicans lying was a newsworthy event.
