Occasionally, I’ll be visiting a few different formums on the board, and after a while, the threads that were marked as having new posts, will no longer be marked as such. How long do I have before my presence is considered a “new visit”, and is there anyway to adjust the setting or avoid the problem?
I think that after a given amount of time (several minutes, perhaps?) after the cookie on your computer was last updated, it’ll update again just to make sure that everything is as recent as possible (given the hardware we have).
It’s been my experience that it’s pretty arbitrary curwin. For all practical matters, you should ignore what it’s showing you as being read an unread- it doesn’t seem to know, or even do a good job of trying to figure it out.
And to stave off your next question, “How come and why not?”, I’ll save the moderators some time and trouble and direct you to the Vbbulletin page. These are the people that designed the board software and who know answers to your specific questions (The SDMB admin doesn’t have much power over the VB application- their simply along for the ride).
Besides, even if they don’t answer your questions, you can still do a search of their posts and see our lovely manhattan the moderator in action. At that message board you can actually see him being polite and respectfull to the people on their board. You ain’t going to find that here, however.
I was going to post a Thread on something very similar…
Many times when I come on the SDMB, I do a Search on my username. Just to see how my nuggets of wisdom … well anyway. Usually, when I get back to SDMB HOME, the message says Welcome PlanMan, you were last here (just a few minutes ago). Of course this shortens the list of Recent Posts considerably, cause the last time I was really here was at least yesterday. Another of those annoying little things. But is there a fix?
and this was necessary because…?
See, even if you believe it to be true, A. that kind of remark belongs in the PIT if anywhere B. it is nonresponsive to the OP.
I disagree with the B part. I did link to the VB bulletin board in that post.
But I suppose you’re right about the commentary. I could have saved that for another time.
My point about non responsiveness was only related to the part I quoted. Sorry if you thought I was aiming at your entire post.
Okay, question’s answered.
Could have done without the slap at Manny, though. Totally not necessary and not done in this forum.
