Marked as read

I accidentally visited the SMDB site this afternoon at 4:31, my time. I realized my error and went some where else. I did not visit any message boards.

Nevertheless, all messages, on all boards, were marked as read. Anything posted since then is marked as not read, of course.

I always thought you had to visit a board, then leave, in order for the messages to be marked as read. And I thought you had to visit every board, then leave, in order for the message FOR THAT BOARD to be marked as read.

I know that we have had problems before, but this seems to be some new thing, or I just don’t understand the mechanism vBulletin uses to decide when a message has been read.

It’s not new. It’s done this for years. For some reason it’s more buggy for some folks than others, with no rhyme or reason as to who it picks on.

It gets me about once every month or two. Some folks get it almost every day.

Yes, I have it happen before also but this was the first time I was able to pinpoint a possible ‘failure’ point.

I think it would be helpful to list those points where a post should be marked as read. It might help tracking down problems.

I wonder if vBulletin has this information or is unique to each installation?

Bob

It happens to me, too. The only way around that is to record the time and date of “You last visited:”, then note that when you access the board later.

I sometimes want to search the board between accesses, so I use Google in my browser’s private mode, which preserves “last visited”.

It would be nice if “last visited” was saved separately by forum. That would at least alleviate the problem.
