One of my friends informed me that when he gets really drunk, he can avoid throwing up when he goes to bed (laying down can sometimes make me sick, no matter how much I’ve had to drink) by placing one foot on the floor. Myself, I have noticed that having one leg outstretched helps me to sleep more comfortably.
Is there a medical reason for this? Some sort of re-aligning of the whatdayacallit?
Dunno; motion sickness can be mitigated somewhat by fixing one’s gaze on something unmoving, such as the horizon; maybe putting one foot on the floor when you’re drunk might work (if indeed its efficacy isn’t just a figment of your friend’s imagination) by providing a similar fixed point of reference when the room seems to be swimming, whereas a soft mattress might not.
I dunno; seems perhaps a bit far-fetched, as much of the cause of vomiting when drunk is down to actual poisoning.
A trick we used to use when I was an ambulance attendant and we had to transport someone who thought they might be sick is to tell them to take deep breaths. I’ve tried it myself when I felt nauseated and it worked for me.
The best anti nausea trick I’ve ever found is a chill to the back of the neck. I don’t know how it works, but a cold rag or an icepack on your nape will reduce your vomitoceousness right down to zero in nothing flat.
Vertigo is often the result of conflicting sensory input. The eyes say one is moving, the proprioceptive sensors say that one is still, or even worse, moving in a different direction.
Putting a foot on the floor helps to fix proprioception firmly and congruently with visual input. Sometimes it does, anyway.
Does anyone else get a lot of saliva build-up in their mouth when they get nauseous? Like, thinner saliva than usual? And swallowing any of it makes the nausea worse?
I do, I sometimes get sudden bursts of weird sour-tasting saliva when I’m feeling nauseous. Swallowing doesn’t make it worse, but it tends to mean I’m about to throw up.
It works well for me to put one foot on the floor. I’ve found the pressure point on my wrist that helps some- on mine it’s just under the palmbone(?) slightly to the right. Eating something light and drinking lots of water helps.
When I was in my late teens I was at a party where most of the attendees really over did it. I went out on the porch to vomit. I leaned over the railing to let loose into the shrubbery, and a friend’s face was looking up at me. Helluva shock. He had also gone out to puke, and for some reason decided to lie down. I never did vomit.
