How often do you wash your hair?

I was taught to shampoo my hair every day. As a child I had very oily hair, so this habit has stayed with me through my adulthood.

However, I guess the hair coloring and the daily shampooing and my getting up near 40 have taken its toll, because when I got my hair cut yesterday the hair dresser said I need to wash only every other day, use baby shampoo if I don’t want to spring for the expensive shampoos, and condition every day. I had noticed my hair was extremely squeaky clean after I washed it and used this, but I didn’t think it was dry.

So, I’m going back to this (wonderful stuff, but hideously expensive) and I’m going to shampoo every other day. We’ll see how that goes, but it’s going to take a little getting used to. I feel like I’m skimping on my hygeine routine.

I usually wash mine every two days or so–and generally try not to get it wet on mornings that I’m not going to wash it. I hate styling my hair, blow drying it, etc. So, I like to let it do what it wants some of the time–even though I do know I look better (more professional) when I do fuss some.

Day two my hair is usually flatter, but still ok looking.

Day three, it starts to feel icky, but if I’m not leaving my apartment, don’t expect to see anyone, I’ve been known to wait till day 4 to wash it, by which time it badly needs the grease removed.

Every day. My hair is very fine and limp. Unless it’s freshly washed, it has no body. Wetting it down with a spray bottle doesn’t seem to work, so I have to wash it.

I wash my hair everyday as it is easier to deal with wet than dry. But I just use a drop of shampoo. I am not going for squeeky clean. It is probably better for hair not to be washed everyday. I know hair photographs a lot better when it is a bit stringy. I certainly don’t see a hygeine problem with washing hair several times a week.

Me too. My hair is long and fine, and when it is clean it is more bouncy.

Another reason I wash everyday is my scalp gets itchy if it isn’t washed - so it isn’t so much washing my hair, as washing my scalp. Plus I exercise and sweat=gross hair.

Generally speaking, every other day. I do, however, run and work out a lot, so if I’ve worked up a sweat, then I have to wash my hair. Otherwise, I wash and condition one day, and just condition the next. My hair is horribly fizzy, and this helps keep it from drying out too much.

I should be washing every other day to keep it from drying out too much. However, I seem to be rather allergic to my dorm room, and always wake up really congested as it is, and I can at least prevent some of that by washing the allergens out of my hair every night before I go to bed. I only wash it every other day when I’m at home, though (since I’m not as allergic to the house), unless I’ve been to the barn or something.

On average, about once a week unless I’ve been doing a lot of sweating. My hair is drier than the Sahara, so it doesn’t need to be washed that much. But on those rare occasions when my hair gets oily, I jump right into the shower.

Every day. I have the opposite problem from some of the posters in this thread. If I don’t wash it every day, I have too much body and I end up looking like an 80’s hair band all by myself.

I can go about three days. Like Eureka, I hate the whole styling routine. If I could afford it, I’d go to my hair lady twice a week and let her do it.

When I was a kid, I’d wash my hair once a week. I don’t remember it ever feeling really dirty, but I think that’s because back then we didn’t use any “products”. No mousse, gels, sprays, conditioners. Plus, those shampoos (remember Prell?) took all the natural oils out of our hair, and I think it took longer for your hair and your scalp to feel icky.

Every day. My hair is baby fine and poker straight, and if I don’t wash it every day, it gets really, really greasy.

About every third or fourth day when it’s long (as it is now). More often when it was short.

My hair is very fine, but thick, and not very oily at all. No matter what I do in the way of styling, or even if I do nothing in the way of styling, it looks best the second day after I wash it, and on the third day still better than on the day I washed it.

In the cold months (almost all of them, actually) I wash it at night because it takes forever to dry and I don’t like going out with damp hair. This leads to some interesting kinks on some mornings–but they are gone the next day.

Usually four times a week. My scalp dries out something fierce if I try to do it every day for more than a week or so at a time.

I usually wash my hair every other day. Mostly because it takes forever for my hair to dry and I just don’t have the patience to do it every day.

Recently, I read in a magazine (Glamour, maybe?) that if you wash every day, it encourages more oil production. Thus, if you get in the habit of washing less frequently, your hair will stay clean longer. Not sure if I buy that. :dubious:

Every other day – when I go a third day, it’s dirty enough that I put it in a pony tail.

Three times a week.

I remember one (other) girl said she wished that she had hair as shiny and healthy looking as mine, and when I said I washed my hair about every other day, she looked at me like I was a syphilitic junky. Hey, bitch, who’s the one with the gorgeous hair? That’s right. :stuck_out_tongue:

48/male. I keep my hair business short and wash it every day (twice actually). I changed my hairstyle this year and now use a small amount of holding jel to maintain more of a curl on top. I always had oily hair and I can only use 1 shampoo on a regular basis (expensive) so I rotate it with a a really cheap shampoo.

Every day, in the morning. Five days out of seven with Pantene, the other two days with Dawn. I’m 48.

Umm, yeah, that Dawn.

You don’t know oily hair. I got mine to be this relatively dry as a pleasant but unexpected outcome of Accutane treatment in my 20s. Prior to that I used to use 50% rubbing alcohol and it was still oily.

I was my hair everyday. If I don’t, I look like I just combed some Crisco into my hair. Its gross.

For some reason, I’ve used Head and Shoulders for about a year now and I swear by it. My hair is dry, a tad bouncy, easy to work with, and soft. Love it.

A friend who has beautiful hair once told me the same thing. Shampooing dries hair out, and hair (or the scalp) defends itself by generating more oil.

She said if you have to shampoo every day, the key is to use a “pH balanced” shampoo. She told me what that meant but I forgot. (It was a long time ago.)
