How old is the word/sign "fuck you"?

I just want to know when the word was first used and was it common back then. I also was wondering how the sign came about.

Thnx in advance

Whatever you do, don’t listen to any myths about it being “Fornicate Under Control of the King”.

For centuries, and still by the great majority, regarded as a taboo-word; until recent times not often recorded in print but frequent in coarse speech.

Master Cecil tackles this:
What’s the origin of the “F” word?.

Right, everyone knows it comes from “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.”

(Why yes, I did learn most of what I know about history from Van Halen albums. Why do you ask?)

WelcomeSmoker. It took me five times reading your original post OP to discover what you really asked.

You want to know when and how the expression fuck you came about. You also wish to know how the origin of the middle finger indicating “fuck you” came about.

If I am right, blink twice.
Fuck you, used as an interjection, first appears around 1900. Was it common. Not likely unless you were in a den of thieves or “the underworld.”

The origin of the finger sign can be found by reading Cecil “fingers” it out

Please try to write your questions a little more clearly. For instance, talking about “the sign.” How is one to know that you were talking about the “middle finger?”

Just wanted to mention that I know the guy who discovered this quotation. He was one of my undergrad profs.
