I haven’t seen it but would like to during the holidays, but was wondering if it’s in the same league as most Almodovar movies (whores & trannies & self-flagellaters & homoerotic trysts galore) or not. I’ve tried not to read too much about the film so I don’t get spoiled, but most of what I’ve read seems to focus on the various bonds and relationships of the various woman characters.
This is because my Mom’s in town and while I’ve shown her other Spanish cinema in the past (she’s fluent), she does have more delicate sensibilities, let’s say, and I don’t want to give her the vapors inadvertently. There are other movies I could take her to instead, but none that I want to see as much as this one.
I’ve tried your typical Family/Christian review websites, but none of the ones I’ve checked have “reviewed” the film, so I can’t get much of a bead on the content.
There’s no explicit sex, but much of the plot involves father-daughter incest. Also there are (slightly weird) references to Penelope’s Cruz’s cleavage, which is in evidence throughout the film but no actual exposure of the nipples that I can recall (and I believe that is something I’d remember). Some reference to farting, also, and some raw language but nothing terribly vulgar to my taste.
I’m assuming the father-daughter component is looked on disapprovingly? There is, I believe, a death in the film; might it be related to that?If it’s fodder for melodrama, that shouldn’t be bad, but if they make more explicit hay of the matter, that might be a turn-off…
By Almodovarian standards, this one is pretty tame. One hooker offering lesbian sex (the offer is rejected). I’d say, go for it. And if your mom objects, blame me.
