Realistically, concede as little as possible and stall for time. Trump’s popularity numbers are tanking, his political capital appears to finally be slipping ever so slightly, and he may well be considerably hobbled after the midterms (assuming his toadies are not competent enough to successfully rig them, about which I am cautiously optimistic). Which is pretty much what Carney has been doing.
Of course, the CPC party line is that Carney was elected because he promised to get a great deal from Trump and he’s completely failed to do this. They appear to be taking the position that we should do whatever is necessary to appease Trump in order to get things back to normal.
This party line of course ignores various realities. First, I’m pretty sure Canadian voters chose Carney because they though he was less likely to capitulate to Trump than Polievre, and not because they expected him to miraculously end Trump’s trade tantrums. Second, the reality is that there is nothing which is sufficient to appease Trump. Give him what he says he wants today, and he’ll declare victory and come back tomorrow with further more onerous demands. The Tories really need to brush up on their Kipling.
We are still negotiating further gains in major sectors, Carney said. As we speak, our team is negotiating. This is not just words. We will get a deal.
Pierre didn’t say that or misinterpret or even lie about that. Carney said it. Let’s be clear. Carney is the one in power, he bought the majority, he makes the deals or doesn’t. Not Pierre. So, rather than worrying about what Pierre is doing, maybe focus on what Carney isn’t doing.
Nah. I, legit, don’t think Carney’s the one preventing a deal here. Any mildly aware Canadian (or Mexican, European, etc…) probably agrees with me. Trump is the stumbling block.
Trump’s signature and word means nothing either way. If he signed something today he’d break it in a week. I’m happy that we don’t have PP giving Trump Canadian kettle-bells in hopes that he will act normal.
I’d still like to know what the hell the govenrment is supposed to do, whether Carney or Poilevre is in power. “Get a deal” is not an answer; how? What sort of deal is possible with a country that has clearly established they don’t keep their word on deals anyway?
It’s absolutely transparent when someone is simply repeating the bullshit Conservative Party line, that Carney "promised to solve every problem with Trump.
Voters put Carney in to DEAL WITH Trump. Not to make a deal with Trump. Because anyone with two eyes and two brain cells to rub together knows that Trump does not make deals. He bullshits, threatens and then renegs on promises. He’s done that again and again and again. You can’t negotiate with a mental case who tweets random thoughts from the crapper at 2:00 am after his meds wear off.
This garbage is simply the Conservative Party line. Along with “Argle Bargle Brookfield”, which is chanted like some kind of magic incantation by the mouthbreathers who don’t even understand how corporations function.
They hated Trudeau with the passion of a thousand burning suns. And it was easy to just change the names on the posterboard of hate that they tote around everywhere they go.
Maybe not insult the orange baboon to start with. The only reason Trump was talking about 51st state was because we sent beta male trudeau who begged him to be kind to us.
I don’t expect liberals or conservatives to make a bad deal. I expect that they will continue to engage and not further insult our largest trading partner.
I also expect that when a person says they are the one to make a deal to acknowledge that they weren’t able to. But keep moving the goal posts on what Carney actually said and how he positioned himself.
As to whether the conservatives could have made a deal, we’ll never know. But they wouldn’t have been hampered by all the regulations that the liberals put in, that Carney is trying to back pedal on, removing them and gotten private investment moving again.
It is shocking that the Conservatives failed to beat the beta repeatedly. Ah well maybe it’s all the gish galloping depleting vital juices or something.
The last election was a collapse of historical proportions by the Conservatives and hilariously it basically gave Canada a conservative PM just not from the Conservative party.
Commentary has degraded when we are calling Liberal voters “beta”. Its very difficult to take someone as honestly interested in Canadian politics when “beta” is earnestly used.
Yes, focus on the insult to Trudeau rather than the point of the message. I’ll make it easier:
The only reason Trump was talking about 51st state was because trudeau begged him to be kind to us.
I can’t help it if people can’t focus on the actual point rather then getting personally insulted about someone slagging their bad choice for PM. That choice cost us a trillion dollars of investment, debt doubled with more to come, citizens rights violated, and countless scandals. Sure, get upset because I’ve insulted him and those who supported him. But maybe acknowledge that actions have consequences and the current PM is back tracking, at least in his rhetoric, on many of those policies that were supported by so many on the SD. And I can bet that now that Carney is saying something different, they will be touting his current agenda just a vehemently, even to the point of denying that those policies actually existed or had any affect, if they did.
A trillion dollars, jeopardized trade deal with our largest partner, debt out of control, and still can’t identify the root cause. Sure blame Trump, blame PP, blame the conservatives, blame Alberta separatists, but don’t blame those who have actually been in power for the past decade and still are.
Frankly, this is common knowledge. We’ve gone over it before. I can’t help it if you won’t acknowledge that Trump made the remark because Trudeau brought it up. He didn’t just randomly say, without any prompting, that Canada should become the 51st state if they didn’t like the tariffs. Even if you don’t believe Trudeau said it would damage Canada’s economy, which I see no real reason to question it because it’s something he’d idiotically say, something prompted Trump to make the remark. And because Trump is a troll, he uses it continuously to get a rise out of people. That people take it seriously tells me much about them.
Your cite makes NO such claims. Of course. It says the diametric OPPOSITE of what you are claiming.
On Monday, Fox News, citing anonymous sources, reported that Trump suggested to Trudeau that if the tariffs would kill the Canadian economy then maybe it should become the 51st state.
I have no idea what part of the linked story you think supports the idea that Trump started talking about 51st state because Trudeau “begged him to be kind to us”. I’ve read it twice and I can’t see where it says anything about what Trudeau said to Trump at that meeting.
On Monday, Fox News, citing anonymous sources, reported that Trump suggested to Trudeau that if the tariffs would kill the Canadian economy then maybe it should become the 51st state.
And then there are a bunch of quotes from various Liberals saying that Trump wasn’t being serious, which is exactly what you say is the correct response to Trump’s comments.
Where does it say Trudeau begged Trump to be kind? Trump’s more usual complaint about Trudeau’s govt was that they were nasty to the US in trade negotiations (because Freeland didn’t concede much in converting NAFTA to CUSMA).
You just have to defend him. Wearing black face - defend him (He was young (almost 30) and didn’t know better). Getting free trips contrary to the rules - defend him. Violate the rights of protestors - well they deserved it. Losing a trillion dollars of investments - he’s not a beta male (dodge or ignore it). Pathetic.
Someone said this and Trump responded. Notice no one else said what prompted Trump to make his joke? And I agree Trump was making a joke, why are you saying I wasn’t? I’m talking about what triggered it. It is commonly known that Trudeau did because it says right there that ‘Trump suggested to Trudeau’. He was responding to Trudeau. Do you know how conversations work?
I would look through the Greenland/Panama thread here.
Trump is totally serious about Greenland. He just hasn’t decided when to pull the trigger. This tells me he is serious about Canada as well. Fortunately for Canadians, U.S. conquest of Canada would be hard enough militarily that I don’t think he can get to it this presidential term. But if Trumpism has legs, you are in more trouble than you might imagine.
