I’ve been realizing lately that if someone says “hi, Katherine” it doesn’t click in a recognition as quickly as if someone calls me Opal.
I have this horrible feeling that I may be developing some minor geek traits!!

You’re 'net, babe.
Well, it’s one of three things:[ul]
[li]You’ve been on line way too long - or…[/li][li]You’re starting to see yourself as your online persona - or…[/li][li]Hi Opal![/li][/ul]
<ducking and running for cover>
Well, if it makes you feel better, when I toured Wabash, I gave the tour guide my last name instead of my first name because I’m generally known by it at school. Although, nobody’s ever called me JimSox
Your name is Katherine?
You strike me as far more Opally. Kinda sparkly and swirly and rainbowy, you know? Opal just suits you better.
Some of my friends at uni call me Narrad.
Funnily enough, they don’t know me from the 'net (actually, I’ve never met anyone from the Internet) – the SD is my dark, dark secret.
“Narrad” is my first name spelt backwards and they’ve simply taken it upon themselves to call me by it.
That was weird. For a minute I thought someone was using my real name on the board. We even spell it the same way and everything.
Yeah, you do seem like more of an Opal. At least Opal’s a real name you can put on a driver’s license.
I’ve had a lot of people tell me I don’t look like a “Katherine.” Maybe we Katherines just take on other names easily.
Hell, I never knew your name was Katherine. And I’ve known you (sorta) for what, three years? I also respond to “JJ” and “Troy” or “Troy McClure,” the latter two being chat names.
Kricket has been a nickname of mine for a while and the people in my house have gotten used to the phone ringing and being for Kricket.
In the last five years at the few different job I’ve had nobody called me by my given name. My name tags and guest check even have said Kricket.
It’s also easier for me to place people on where I know them from since I have met a lot of people working in resturants and bars.
If they ask for Kricket it’s from work and if they ask for Kristine, Kristy, or (rarely) Kris then it’s family or long time friend.
I do have a few friends that go back and forth between the two. And at work even though nobody uses any form of my given name I still turn around and look when I hear it until I realise that most of the people there have no idea that my name is anything other than Kricket.
I mean, it’s possible…I was born in 71’ and my playmates names were Rainy, Sunshine, and Star.
My closest friends have called me Mudd over a decade. It seems more like my “true” name than my actual surname does. I have occasionally started to put it on legal documents, and then corrected myself, which I’m quite certain doesn’t inspire confidence.
So?
And I agree. Who’s Katherine? Never 'eard of 'er.
You seem much more Opalesque.
Both Opal and Katherine are (to me) beautiful names i wouldn’t worry about it.
For the record I answer to G, Gareth, Gaz, Garius, Dexter, Ed and English
Until 6th grade I went by Kathy. Gag. I’m sooo not a Kathy.
Now, when I see mention of “December” in an on-line article, my first thought is that they’re talking about me.
That’s why Baby Kate is a Kate.
And I’ve responded to being called ‘Jonathan’ (which is nowhere near my real name for the JC-trivia deprived) for MUCH longer than I’ve been online.
I call Scott Evil “Scott” about half the time.
And I DATED him.
I’ve been Hamadryad for…well, we’re hurtling toward 18 years. If I didn’t answer to it by now, it would be kinda weird.
Also, though, My real name and “Hama” aren’t THAT far off.
I didn’t know you were “Katherine” either, until Gingy referenced you over the summer as if I knew you.
“And Katherine, so that will be fun.”
“…who?”
“Katherine. Opal?”
“OHHHHHHHHH!!! fhs”
I’ve been answering to “Cranky” for some time, but that doesn’t necessarily have to do with the SDMB.
I have the same problem . . . If people call me Eve I don’t even look up, but when they call me Eve . . .
Mrs. bee called me lieu in bed the other night…
Wonder what she meant?
Hehe! When I went up there recently she referenced YOU and I said “Who?”… pretty much the exact same conversation! hehe
