Too many syllables in FairyChatMom for anyone to use it regularly, I expect - it doesn’t exactly roll pleasantly off the tongue. [sub](bracing for suggestive comments here)[/sub]
I introduce myself as Michelle, but I’m pretty well conditioned to turn around when I hear someone say “Mom” - which is odd, since I just have one kid - it’s not like I’m accustomed to multiple young 'uns calling me. I’ve got a coworker who calles me “sailor” and despite using my given name for the last 30 years, I still encounter relatives who call me Mickie. Many years ago, I also responded to “Fred” - a nickname bestowed upon me by a strange coworker.
I didn’t know that I identified so much with my screen name until I was having lunch with a friend at a place where you place your order and give them your name…when your order is ready, they call your name out to let you know it is ready.
Well, we both got our lunch and were chatting when…they called “Scotty”. I got up and was half way across the room toward the counter…(my friend watching me like…“what are you DOING?”) when I realized…I am NOT Scotti, I am CHERI and I already HAVE my Caesar Salad!
Talking to my sister, SO and SO’s sister tonight about jewelry:
SO is B.
SO’s sister is M.
Only reason my sister wasn’t addressed by first letter of her name is that her name is Meg. Can’t very well have two Ms in one convo.
Among others who get addressed by one letter sometimes:
Medea’s Child purrplebear’s daughter (and purrp herself)
Random NYC dopers when we’re D2ing (“Hey, S, did you need that Silks?” “Sure, J, could you fetch it? Thanks!” “BRB.” “OK, F”).
And yet it was alien to me when M started calling me P…
