I’m a very occasional gamer: a few Marios, some Zeldas and my all time favorite Super Metroid. So when I heard that Metroid Prime had been released I immediately went out and bought it.
I didn’t especially care for the first person shooter format but it still seemed like a pretty good game until I ran into that mean sob Flaahgra. I’ve now died at least 10 times and the most I’ve knocked over is 3 mirrors. How the hell do I kill this prick?
Ah, the big weed… thou shalt get thee to thine ACE Hardware near thine save station and take up thy lawn mower…
Just kidding.
Most of the Metroid Prime bosses are set up so there’s no magic bullet, but with Flaagra what you need to do is keep him(?) good and stunned.
Soon as you get control, whack him upside the head with a missile. That’ll make him lean back, all color drained out of his face. Keep a lock on and charge your regular ammo (you did search the Chozo ruins thoroughly enough to find that again, didn’t you? Good…). While you’re charging up, move around the circle toward the mirror. Keep on whacking him as you go around the circle.
You can knock the mirrors out with charged blasts. Save your missiles for that green sumbitch in the middle… The important thing is to keep an eye on the weed… if he’s still looking mighty pale, you’re golden. Yellow, be careful - he’s about to come around and show you the definition of halitosis. That’s when you’ll want to be especially sure to give him a shot. Especially when you’ve got four mirrors to keep off-line, you’ll want to use your missiles to keep him K.O.'ed for a nice, long time. That way, he won’t have a chance to fix the mirrors or get at you.
Flaagra owned me a couple of times, even when I knew in principle how to beat him. Get the rhythm down, though, and he’s easy. Then the next really tough boss is the Omega Pirate. You won’t encounter him for a while, but once you do the best advice I have is to practice… practice… practice.
Thanks Engywook, that’ll help a lot. I found something on the internet that said in order to stun him I had to hit him with three missiles, and wait till he fully recovered to do it or it wouldn’t have any effect. So I kept running out of missiles and getting killed. And man that mother sure doesn’t waste any time in knocking those mirrors back.
How do you move around; regular mode, ball form or the straffing mode? The regular mode seems awfully slow and straffing doesn’t seem to be much faster.
Flaahgra took me a while too, but once you get the hang of it you’ll be surprised at how easy it is. The key is strafing. Once you get in there (and scan stuff if you wish), you lock on to him and don’t let go. Stun him, and stay locked on as you sidestep around the edge of the circular room. Strafe all the way around until the base of the first mirror that came down is in your lock. Hit it with a charged shot. The cut scene will show Flaahgra shrinking and will automatically place you in front of the first bomb slot. Roll in and bomb that sombitch. Then you just repeat for the next three iterations of 2, 3, and 4 mirrors. The key is to maintain your lock on Flaahrga and keep him stunned as you strafe around and bump the mirrors up.
I came in here expressly to say that the world “Flaahgra” reminds me of a piece of limp lettuce. Flaaaaaahgra. The big evil boss is a piece of limp, floppy lettuce.
