How to Comment on a YouTube?

I found a documentary I wanted to comment on YouTube. After logging in and jumping through hoops (related to and/or owned by Google), I finally get to what seems like a comment field. I type my response just to find the “Post” button is grayed out. The only active “post” option is to post a video response? WTF?

Have others run into this? And, is there an easier way to post a comment to a video? Personally, I dont recall it being this hard in the past, although I rarely post…so it’s been awhile.

I’m wondering if it’s because you’ve just registered as a new user? Just like on here, I had to wait a day or two before being able to post?

Some videos have comments disabled.

Easy, just make sure your comments are as self-referential, ignorant or irrelevant as possible:

“I’m only 13 but I love the Doors from when I first heard them. YOLO Jim Morisson LOL!”

“Im not a pilot, but wouldnt the plane had have just bounced of the water?”

“I earn $825 dolars an hour from my cmputer at home. Find outhow xkdf.45.ru.”

If you do not see the comment spot, then they have indeed turned it off.

I don’t blame them. I often turn off comments for my videos. It’s a mine-field out there.

Is there a way to message the person directly?

Most of the OPs posts in GQ would fill the bill nicely.

Like “How to comment on a YouTube?”

I’m confused, let’s recap

“I wanted to comment on YouTube”
Okay, you want to make a comment, easy enough

“I finally get to what seems like a comment field. I type my response just to find the “Post” button is grayed out.”
Strange, never seen that, let’s keep reading.

“The only active “post” option is to post a video response? WTF?”
WTF indeed, didn’t you just say it was greyed out?

“And, is there an easier way to post a comment to a video?”
Easier then what? Type the comment and hit “The only active “post” option”.

You’re going to have to explain this differently. You want to post a comment to a video, but you don’t want to post a comment to a video, you said the post button is greyed out, but you said the only post button is to post a video response…which is what you said you wanted to do. Maybe I’m just misunderstanding you.

Oooooooohhhh, I get it. There’s a blue link that says “Create a video response”. There’s a grey button that says “Post”. You can push the grey button, it’s okay.

You’re confusing the ideas of “post a response to a video” with “post a video response.”

If you go here to this very random video I just chose out of the blue, you’ll see it has a comment box with no associated button. I think that is throwing Jinx off.

Then when you click on/type in the box, a link and a button show up (actually, first some overlays about your Google and YouTube names show up, if you haven’t already answered these questions. This is also throwing Jinx off.)

What is now throwing Jinx off - the crux of the matter - is that below the comment box there is a blue link “Create a video response” (which means “upload a video that is a response to this video”) and a gray button that says “Post.” This is also throwing Jinx off because in the 1994 Internet, blue = go and gray = disabled.

Click the “Post” button, Jinx. It’s not disabled, it’s just gray.

Good news, too - you won’t be asked the questions about your Google and YouTube names in the future, now that they have your answers. So that rigamarole is over. It’ll be easier to post comments in the future.

There could be a slight possibility that the button requires javascript to work (there is javascript attached to it) and Jinx has javascript disabled. So the “Post” button looks disabled because it’s gray, and IS disabled because you have no javascript support. If you push that “Post” button and nothing happens, then you need to turn on javascript support to make it work.

Just so you know, some videos don’t allow commenting and they don’t have the comment box at all.

So that’s the issue. Jinx didn’t even fucking bother to try to click on the button before he sent out one of his hurr-dee-hurrs. He just looked at it and thought, “why spend a microsecond and try that. I’ll just compose a post to the Dope and waste a bunch of other people’s valuable time.”

It’s not gray on my end–at least, not gray in the way disabled things are gray. The button is a light silver, but that’s the default color for buttons. The only reason I could think you’d think it was inactive is if you either actually clicked on it, or a gray button used to mean it was disabled. (possible, since the button used to be blue.)

If only that were true. They actually continually ask you over and over, presumably until you choose the name they think is the right one.

Oh darn, there’s 30 seconds of your life you’ll never get back.

Let’s back off and tone down these comments. If you have problems with another poster, you know where to take it.
