How to fix sputtering Bluetooth speaker connection?

My JBL speaker has served me well for 2 years. My primary phone updated to Android 13. Since then I can’t play music through the JBL speaker without it sputtering. The short stops and starts are very annoying.

It happens playing saved music on my SD card and Accu Radio. (off the Internet).

The JBL speaker still works fine with my tablet and family members phones. The jbl speaker isn’t broken.

My Bose Earbuds work fine on my phone. They’re newer. Bought last summer.

I’ve tried removing the Bluetooth speaker, reboot and detect it again. Didn’t help. I installed the JBL App and confirmed the speaker software is up to date.

Is it time to factory reset the phone? I play music constantly and need this speaker.

I’m concerned it’s a Android version 13 issue. I’ve waited a month hoping it would get fixed.

A quick google throws up the following suggestion :-

  1. Go to the settings menu and click “About phone” → software information
  2. Scroll down to the bottom where you see “Build number”
  3. Tap it seven (7) times. Android developer settings are now enabled.
  4. Go to the settings menu again and set the developer option “Turn off A2DP hardware offload” toggle to on.

(and fwiw, if it’s relevant, i don’t have any kids)

I’m trying it now. So far, no sputter.

Weird that I used this phone with this speaker for 18 months with Android 10,11,12. Ver 13 broke it.

I wonder if my older jbl speaker is becoming software obsolete? It was made in 2019. I bought one in late 2020.

Thank you for the help. I was unaware of this feature. Mine was enabled by default. I toogled it off and rebooted.

I didn’t realize the Bluetooth device could decode the audio. That’s interesting.
