How to link to a specific post?

I’ve noticed every now and then people linking to specific posts. When I quote the post to check the coding it appears as a postid#xxxxx or something like that.

Can anyone tell me how this is done? It’s so much better than giving a link to a thread when you want to be specific about a particular post.
