The first is caused by Google Chrome. I get these square shaped pop ups at the lower right corner of my screen at least 3x bigger than the Outlook pop-up notifications of incoming emails (that also appear in the same corner of my screen). How do I stop the Chrome pop-ups?
The second type occurs in Chrome (and maybe Firefox?). Whenever I click on an active link, for example, the active link will open in a new tab along, PLUS another new tab will also open with something related, some annoying survey, or such. I’d really like to stop these superfluous tabs from opening.
If you can help me with #1 and/or #2 above, it would be greatly appreciated.
I should add that, regarding the Chrome pop-ups: First, these are more like annoying notifications for ads and maybe off-beat news. And, if you were wondering, they identify themselves as Chrome…unless it’s a Chrome spoof, but I doubt it.
For #1 I’m assuming you’re talking about site notifications. Chrome’s default is to allow a site to ask you if you want notifications, and you probably clicked “Allow” on one or more sites without realizing it. Click the three dots and upper right, go to Settings / Advanced / Site Settings / Notifications, and you can edit what sites are allowed to notify or globally disable them.
For #2 I’ve never experienced this. Maybe a virus / adware / malware?
An adblocker will take care of #2. I assume this isn’t happening just on the Dope, but on other sites as well? I know you’re a member, but an adblocker will protect you elsewhere, too.
I’m not sure if what I am experiencing is a true ad pop-up. But, it 's a good place for me to start. I’ll see what my Norton Anti-Virus does regarding pop-up blocking. I can say I do not get pop-ups in the typical sense, so I assume it is working. Thanks for the thought!
I had six of these annoying pop-ups, one after another I’d have to get rid of whenever I went into Google Chrome. Recently got rid of 'em, and I’m not much on computers, so not sure if I’ll even be using the right terminology, but hopefully this will help.
I have the latest windows 10, use Google Chrome, IE, and Firefox. I wasn’t in Google Chrome to get rid of my problem, I just got out of my browsers, and went to the lower right hand corner of my screen. I took the mouse and hovered over icons, the first one that looks like a housetop, will say “show hidden icons”. You may find most if not all of your problems here, at least with me it did. A particular driver update was bogus as with others. Simply note which ones keep popping up on you, and avoid deleting legit ones. Exit out of there.
Then go to lower left hand corner, type in uninstall. A screen pops up, scroll down until you find the offending app or apps, then uninstall it. There were only two apps that were causing me all of the havoc, IIRC, I uninstalled them, and for the last week has been smooth sailing. Although the driver update somehow managed to pop back up today, I was easily able to kill it again.
As another said, be aware of accepting notifications. You can also get there, by typing in lower left hand corner “notifications”, and taking a look as to what is on or off. I’ve shut down all of mine with the one click, and that has helped a lot too.
