how to turn off facebook news feed

I don’t want anyone else to see when I add a new person as a friend. But that actually comes up as a status message for all my ex-girlfriends to see now.
How do I turn that off on facebook? It used to be obvious, but I can’t figure out how to disable it now. How do I change it so that no one sees that I added a new person in their news feed?

And a related question – how can I turn off the ability for other people to see my list of friends?

For your first question: it looks like you don’t have that option any more, meaning Facebook no longer allows you to control what makes it to a news feed.
