“If appropriate” to the first (I’m not going into a discussion of shit types, I’m neither that young nor that old) and to the second, “front goes to front, back goes to back”. This rule works in any situation. Based on anecdotal information, not every woman follows that rule and not following it is linked to a greater incidence of UTIs than following it; I do not know if there are actual published studies on the subject.
As it happens, I was seated on one of the toilet-seat-mounted devices last week, so I had the opportunity to observe that the on / off knob had an adjustment for front / back.
India is a country that would benefir from adopting the bidet system. Their hotel bathrooms have a western style of toilet ( not the squat system) and yet provide a tap and a tumbler to bring water to th toilet to clean the backside resulting in horrendous splash on the toilet seat.
Get a bidet folks.
