I worked online, did some chores, went to a work meeting, ran errands, worked online some more, took a walk, and made a few calls. I will be watching a DVD later because I don’t care to watch the returns on TV.
And I think everyone should visit the Despair dot com site and order a t-shirt or poster that has a pic of the White House and the caption: Goverment: If you think the problems we create are bad, just wait until you see our solutions.
I got up at 5 so I could be at the polls by 6. We opened at 7, voting for three precincts, a total of 374 registered voters. 177 people voted, several for the first time, and we registered five new voters.
We closed up at 9 and were finished with the recordkeeping and calling in the results by 9:30.
My precincts were 86-81 Obama. I know that doesn’t total 177, but for some inexplicable reason, 10 people didn’t bother to vote for a presidential candidate. They voted in the local contests, but not for president.
We didn’t have many slow spots, but we only had a line once, and nobody waited more than a couple minutes to vote.
What a great day.
ETA: The highlight was three generations of a family coming in at the same time – eight people, all Democrats. I remember them from the caucuses in January. Several parents brought their kids and spent time showing them what a ballot looks like and how to fill one out.
The lowlight was Republican poll-watchers showing up to get copies of voter lists – without ID. They left empty-handed.
It’s almost 7 AM, and I’m trying to decide how soon would be too soon to get my celebratory drink on. Right now it’s leaning towards 7:30AM, after I walk the dog. I’m a student, so I’m not even going to get fired!
I put in 5 or 6 hours volunteering at a local non=profit museum and then enjoyed a birthday cake decorated by my grand-daughters. 3 and 4 year olds can be v-e-r-y creative with frosting and sprinkles.
I was going to call the local Obama group Monday and volunteer for GOTV (They had left me voicemail on Sunday) but I got a call from the local BOE and ended up working the polls. Got there at 5:45 AM and left at 9:00 PM. The precinct I was working in had 236 voters come in, plus 138 early voters, out of a total of 548 registered.
McCain won the county of course, but the number of people that showed up and voted was tremendous. Out of 14,000 votes, Obama got just over 5,000. Much better than the 4000 that Kerry got and the 4200 by Gore. About 5, 000 people voted early here, out of about 20,000 registered voters.
There were 2 poll watchers there, I found out after the polls closed that they were from the Democratic Party. While I understand that they wanted to make sure things were on the up and up, it was a waste of manpower here. This is a Republican area, with its’ share of idiots, but the local BOE and poll workers are very passionate about people getting to vote for who they want and getting it counted accurately.
Then I came home and switched between the cable news shows until after 1:00 AM, while surfing various online news and polling sites. I am a middle-aged moderate white man and I can’t believe how emotional I am about this right now.
