How would you feel if all music completely disappeared?

A superior alien life form wishes to eradicate all sources of pleasure from the universe. They’ve sent us a signal that, in 1 week’s time, all music will be permanently removed from earth. Not only won’t we be able to play a record, cd or any other music delivery tool, but we won’t even be able to remember any of it. We will just remember that music existed and how we felt about it.

The aliens promise that we won’t be bothered again for another million years or so, since they have to make their way around the universe.

How would you feel when you hear the news?

Moved IMHO --> Cafe Society.

It would be a profound tragedy. Music can move us like nothing else.

Thanks. I actually thought about putting this in Cafe Society, but chose IMHO instead to get a better sample. I figured the poll would be skewed in CS, since music lovers tend to flock there.

Well, there would still be rap.

It wouldn’t be a plus, but I wouldn’t be too bothered. I’d miss it a bit but I’d just start listening to radio 4 in the car instead. Actually come to think of it, it may be a good thing as, without needing to worry about the background music, TV shows, movies and games may come out quicker.

Damn, Silenus beat me to it.

Except mine was “So Rap is unaffected?”

Poetry would really take off I bet. + Why wouldn’t we be making music again?

I feel the burn from here.

It would be sad but survivable for me.

Music allows me to stay up all night on cross country drives and keeps me from rampaging through my coworkers and their incessant talking. My life would be very much changed since I have to have background music to whatever I’m doing. I don’t know what I would do to replace it.

I absolutely love rap and this cracked me the hell up.

Unemployed.

I’m a big fan of rap. However, rap without music is just “spoken word”, so not the same thing. And we won’t be able to create or remember music again. This is why the question is asking specifically asking on how you’d feel after learning the news (i.e. during the 1 week that you have to still listen and remember music).

We’d still have the blues. Ain’t no alien been born that can drive the blues away.

Well, my career would be fucked (I’m a musicology student). Pass the cyanide, please.

I’d be sorely tempted to take that cyanide. I can’t imagine a life without music.

I said I’d be disappointed but after giving it a bit more thought I think it would have more of an impact than I first thought.

I don’t listen to music for music’s sake as many people do. For instance it would never occur to me to take my Ipod with me anywhere but the gym. But it definitely serves a purpose in my life.

Like Oredigger77, I use music daily to drown out my annoying coworker. It would suck majorly to have to really hear her all day. Driving without the distraction of music would be a drag and I can’t even imagine working out without music. Movies wouldn’t be nearly as good and I know many people would disagree but I enjoy hearing music when I shop; even Muzak.

On the other hand, I think we’d get over it fairly quickly if we couldn’t remember any of the music.

Interesting question.

Disappointed, surely…but I could get by with natural sounds. Birdsong, the wind in the treetops, waves crashing on the beach are all music to my ears.

Since I can’t pass up a good nit-pick, do the aliens take instinctive songs out of the heads of songbirds too?

I honestly don’t think I’d be able to handle it. I’d have to raise a huge army of musicans to fight off the aliens. You know what? I’m going to go write that down, since it would make an awesome story.
