How's the draft going for your team?

Giants fan checking in -

Little Cloud, this is the part I don’t understand. Assume for a minute that the Giants saw something in Eli Manning that they didn’t see in Roethlisberger, and decided that they simply couldn’t live without Manning. OK, fine.

But they still blew a terrific opportunity. The Browns were willing to give up a second round pick for the chance to move up ONE slot, into #6. The Giants could have traded their #4 to Cleveland for its #6 and its second round pick, #6 in R2. Cleveland takes Sean Taylor at #4. Washington takes Kellen Winslow at #5. Detroit, picking #6, almost certainly still takes Roy Williams. The Giants are up at #7. They pick Phillip Rivers, and make exactly the same trade with the Chargers. Except now, they have an extra early second round pick. I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to observe some of the players still available at pick #38.

The thing is, I can’t think of a single good reason why Accorsi would not do this. There is no blessed way that Rivers wouldn’t still be available at #7. Detroit wouldn’t have traded its pick to Pittsburgh (the only other team likely to have taken Rivers), because Detroit really wanted Roy Williams and he would have been gone by #11 (Jacksonville probably would have taken him instead of Reggie Williams). GAH!

Cover story of espn.com has Detroits’ draft as the headliner. Awesome.

Depressed Packer Fan.

Our GM traded our 3rd and 4th round picks to move up in the third round to draft…

A Punter.

Yes, that is not a typo. Mike Sherman gave up picks #102 and #153, so they could move up 15 spots to draft a FUCKING PUNTER!

Here’s some names that will haunt me: Will Poole, Bo Schobel (Not that I have an unhealthy obsession with the Schobel clan. As I said to Matt…"Restraining Order…Schmestraining order…), Nathan Vasher, Will Allen. All guys who could make a huge, positive impact traded away to get a punter who would have been available much later. Feh.

IMHO, they also messed up by trading down their second round pick (#55), when both Antwan Odom and Marquise Hill (my #3 and #4 ranked DE’s) were still on the board. I understand that the Philly game and Mike McKenzie’s shooting his mouth off had Sherman concerned, but to draft 2 corners with your first 2 picks when you need a pass rush (especially considering the talent at CB that was still available later) was just plain silly.

Here’s who we got:

1st Round, #25 - Ahmad Carrol - In a division with Randy Moss and Charles Rogers, using your first round pick on a 5’9" cornerback is just plain wrong. I do have high hopes for this guy, he’s got great speed and leaping ability, he hits hard, but he’s not an interceptor and is prone to biting on fakes. It was a waste of a pick, because he would’ve been there definitely in the second, and possibly in the third rounds.

3rd Round, #70 - Joey Thomas - a converted quarterback who played at the college football powershouse Montana State. At least he’s six feet tall. He’s got good measurables, but an injury history and lack of experience make him a project. I’m not sure who or why they were so enamored with this guy, especially since he’s a project, and given the rest of the draft, I’m not in the mood to give Sherman the benefit of the doubt.

3rd Round #72 - Donnell Washington - Big guy with All-Pro talent who has never lived up to his potential. He’s a bust waiting to happen. Lack of effort and stamina gives me serious concerns. That being said, if he gets his weight down, plays hard, and keeps his head on straight, he could be the steal of the draft. Too many if’s for my liking, especially considering we gave up a fourth round pick to move up to get him.

3rd Round #87 - B.J. Sanders - He is the best at his position and, if we’re lucky, he’ll be a starter for the Packers for a long time. But he’s a PUNTER. I like the guy, I’m happy he’s on our team. But he’s a PUNTER. He’ll help win field position battles and plays hard. But he’s a PUNTER. The next punter wasn’t taken until the 6th round, meaning this guy was a huge reach with way to much given up to get him. Did I mention he’s a PUNTER?

All that moving up to get PUNTERS and fat guys, left the Packers with no picks until the 6th round.

6th Round, #179 - Corey Williams - 1 year started at a small school. A fat guy to stop the run, but very little upside. I can’t get excited about this guy, try as I might.
7th Round, #251 - Scott Wells - Hey! It only took 7 rounds for me to be happy with a pick. This guy is a four year starting center at a major school. He’s a very good player, and will be groomed to replace our starting center in a couple years. I like this guy and I think this was a great pick. Too bad it took until the seventh round to make me happy.

All said, I’m very upset with the draft, not so much because the players all stink, but we reached way too much and gave up too much to get players who aren’t ready to start. I give them a C minus overall. Here’s hoping I’m wrong though.
Some other brain droppings:

The Lions and the Chargers had great drafts.
Eli Manning is either an idiot or a prick. Here’s hoping he’s just an idiot.
Packers and the Iggles had the worst drafts.
Leonard Little is a complete and utter waste of flesh.
Stephen Jackson will pay big time dividends for the Rams. I don’t understand why Parcell’s let this guy slip through his fingers.
I miss fantasy football.
There you have it.

I’m a stellers fan. Looks like we got a QB. I’m glad, 'cause we’ve needed one for years. Whether or not this is the one we need, we’ll see.

Well lets see, the bad news is that the one man entrusted with all football decisions (on and off field) for my team gave up a high second round pick to move up one spot in the first round but the good news is the guy we got could be the best tight end this town has seen in 26 years. Leave it to Butch Davis to get us Kellen Winslow jr. while he proves why we need Ozzie Newsome.

We then traded our 3rd, 6th and flipped 5ths with Indy to get Sean Jones in the second round. To hear Butch say it, if he had our original #36 pick in the second round he’d have taken Jones there so it’s more like we only traded a 3rd and a 6th rounder to move up in the first. [John Aston from Night Court] I’m feeling much better now[/JAfNC].

While I am admittedly mystified that we waited till late in second day to address our rather huge need for O-line help (unless we took Winslow for his pass protection skills) this might not be the worst Browns draft I’ve seen, or even I’m sad to say the worst draft I’ve seen Butch Davis make. As a Browns fan we just gotta trust that things will work out, that and keep that anti-depressant perscription filled.

I was left scratching my heads for both sides in the Dallas-Buffalo trade. I was utterly flummoxed when Parcells passed on a guy who I thought had top ten talent that dropped all the way to 22. They did get a good deal for the pick (1st rounder next year 2nd and 5th this year) but there has to be a point where you go away from your pick value chart and take the guy you desperately need. For Buffalo this seemed like an awful lot to give up for a questionable talent.
