This is part of the reason I have doubts about using the ban-hammer on him; maybe more of a suspend. Almost all of my posts at some given moment in time will be from IMHO with the odd ATMB and of course the MMP. Often, depending on the threads others begin, they could be said to follow a theme. Could that be evidence of a future claim that I am trolling; especially if it starts to honk off some of the usual gang of suspects? Was this a case of the old Texas adage “he just needed killing - we’ll figure out why later”?
I doubt a suspension would have done a lot of good; the track record on those is kinda mixed over the years. But to ban, and ban for trolling? Even though I basically agree something just doesn’t feel quite right.
Now, I am definitely not the arbiter of sincerity, but Huey Freeman was just so over-the-top to me that I don’t really know what he added to the board. The casual misogyny was also extremely off-putting.
There are plenty of alternative viewpoints on the SDMB, though we could stand to have more POC around… but as has been hashed to death in this thread, just being a POC doesn’t really mean you get a free pass to be an asshole.
I can’t say I’ve ever seen suggestions from Huey on how whites should treat blacks better, probably because we’re all racist scum who deserve only scorn and derision.
When white people ban a white person, they immediately close the thread as it would be unfair to the white banned person because they can’t defend themselves. But when when white people ban a black person, they have a posting party. And probably a parade too.
“Fairness in moderation” is a concept that’s crucially important to the health and viability of any message board, and the Huey situation has generated a lot of opinions on the topic.
